HENRI IBENDEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI BENDEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in womens hats, and has in view a binding at the edge of the brim which will securely connect the inner and outer facings of the hat together and keep the lining and covering, if such should be provided, well stretched out, and give this part of the hat a finished appearance.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a womans hat having the edge of the brim bound in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a radial section of the brim on the line 2 of Fig. 1, showing the binding in detail.
For the purpose of illustrating the nature of my improvement I have shown a hat in which the brim is constructed of an outer facing 5 and an inner facing 6, the outer facing being of a material sufficiently stifi' to hold the inner facing or lining 6 firmly stretched out without the usual intermediate stiflener, such a hat, for example, as a straw hat, the invention, however, being applicable to hats in general.
The binding as constructed in accordance with my invention is composed of a succession of lock stitches of two threads 7 and 8 respectively, the threads being looped with each other between the two facings, as indi- Specification of Letters Patent.

cated at 9, and at the under side of the brim, as indicated at 10, and are radially worked back and forth in thisfashion until the entire edge of the hat is thoroughly covered, a wire 11 being introduced at the edge of the facings of the brim, around which the thread 7 is successively passed. The threads are firmly drawn as they are worked, securely binding the facings of the brim together and keeping the lining firmly drawn out, the tension on the lining being in a direction lengthwise of the threads. The wire 11 is preferably covered with paper or such like material 12, which increases its diameter and prevents it from cutting the threads, the wire serving to retain the brim in the form in which it is shaped.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A hat having a brim comprising an inner and outer facing, a stifiening wire arranged around the brim at the outer edges of the facing, and a thread binding Worked radially around and entirely covering the edge of the brim, binding the wire thereto and joining the facings together.
2. A hat having a brim constructed with an inner and outer facing, a stiifening wire arranged around the brim at the outer edges of the facings, and a thread-binding around the edge of the brim and covering the stiffening wire, comprising two threads successively interlocking between the facings of the hat.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRI BENDEL.
