ALONZO WOODRUFF, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SUPERB STAMP PAD COMPANY, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
INKINGr-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1910. Serial No. 592,885.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo WOODRUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists of certain new and useful improvements in color or ink pads, and more particularly of that class or style known as block pads, that is a pad having for its base a block, the top of which is covered with felt or other suitable material, on which is mounted the pad proper.
With all inked pads, it is difficult to prevent the ink from escaping from the pad but in box pads this waste is received by the box and held there. In block pads, however, the surplus ink is absorbed by the felt upon which the pad rests, and while there is no objection to this when the surplus ink is held underneath the pad, there is a very serious objection when the ink seeps out onto the edge surrounding the pad, as it gives the pad a very untidy appearance, soils the cover, the edge of which rests upon the marginal felt' when closed and makes the goods, while held in stock unsalable.
The object of my invention is to construct a pad in such a manner, that these objections will be obviated, the surplus ink provided for without in any manner soiling the marginal felt, thereby affording a better appearance to the pad and the liability of soiling the hands of the user avoided. To accomplish this result, the block which forms the base of the pad, is first covered with a sheet of non-absorbent material, such as water proof paper or cloth, and over. this is placed a sheet of absorbent material of any suitable nature and upon this covering is placed the pad proper. Around these, but a distance away from them, there is placed a strip of felt or other absorbent material, so arranged that the absorbent fiber does not come in contact with the inked pad at any point, but the exposed marginal felt or other material is always separated from the pad. This makes it impossible for the surrounding strip to become impregnated with ink, as is the case with the ordinary commercial pad.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings and described it in the specification and claims following, reference being had thereto, and similar letters of reference indicating identical parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pad made according to my invention, a portion being cut away to illustrate it more clearly. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
A represents the block or base of the pad and may be made of any desired material. Upon the block or base is mounted the pad B, but between the block and the pad there ,is first placed a sheet of non-absorbent or Water-proof material C and over this a sheet of absorbent material F. The non-absorbent sheet preferably extends entirely over the block while the absorbent covering is under the pad alone.
D is a strip of material, preferably absorbent in its texture, which is mounted upon the block and surrounds the pad, but is separated from the same by a space G.
The usual cover E is provided to protect the pad when not in use.
It is obvious that the marginal strip D may only partly surround the pad if desired.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A block pad comprising a base, a sheet of non-absorbent material applied to and covering the entire top of said base, a sheet of absorbent material applied to said nonabsorbent covering and an ink pad mounted upon the absorbent sheet, said absorbent sheet being no larger than the ink pad.
or base, a sheet of non-ahsorbent material terial with a space between said strip and said ink pad.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in i the presence of tWo Witnesses.
ALONZO WOODRUFF.
2. A block inking pad comprising a block 10 applied to and covering the top of said block, a-saturatedink pad of less size than the said block above said non-absorbent material and a strip of suitable material betweenthe ink pada-nd the edge ofthe block; applied to the top of the non-absorbent ma Witnesses:
