PATENTED FEB. 4, 1908.
DENIS THOMAS OSULLIVAN, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
INKIN G-PAD Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
llprlication filed April 26. 1907. Serial No. 370,480,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENis Tnonxs OSUL- LIVAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WV est Orange, in the countyof Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Inking-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to inking pads such as used upon desks in offices for inking stamps before they are applied in marking papers.
The object of the invention is to produce a pad which is adapted to be used with a small stamp such as a dating stamp, but which can be also used for larger stamps when desired; the general purpose being to protect the pad from dust or dirt and prevent evaporation of the ink, and further to construct the pad so that it will operate as a holder for the stamp.
The device is intended as a substitute for more expensive automatic inking stamps, and operates to keep the stamp in contact with the pad when not being applied to the papers.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the inking pad, the stamp being removed; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the stamp and pad, a portion of the pad being broken away and shown in cross section.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the case of the pad, which has the form of a flat rectangular box having a body 2 to which a cover 3 is attached at the back by a hinge connection 4. W ithin this box or case a pad body 5 is provided, consisting of some suitable absorbent material. It should be understood that the pad 5 is soaked with ink, so that if the face of a stamp is applied thereto, the ink will adhere to the stamp so that it may be used to mark the pa ers in the usual manner.
n order to adapt the pad to the purpose of my invention, I provide the cover 3 at a suitable point such as its middle point, with an opening 6 which is preferably of rectangular form, as shown. The material of the cover on the longitudinal edges of this opening is bent upwardly so as to form lips or flanges 7 which diverge as shown so as to constitute a good seat or socket to hold a stamp S, which stamp is of the common form having a handle 9 and having a tapered body to the lower face of which the type 10 is attached. \Vhen the stamp is in position as indicated in Fig. 2, the type face is in con tact with the face of the pad 5, so that it will become inked. In this way a small dating stamp or similar stamp can be held in a convenient position and in contact with the pad, so that in order to apply the stamp to a paper, only one movement of the hand is necessary. In other words, the cover of the pad constitutes a holder for supporting in position upon the pad, a stamp smaller than that which may be used with the pad. hen the pad is to be used to ink a larger stamp, the cover 3 is simply thrown open so as to expose the entire surface of the pad 5, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An inking pad having a removable cover excluding the air and having a small opening in which a small removable stamp may be seated.
2. An inking pad having a body of absorbent material with a removable cover excluding the air, said cover having a small opening with imwardly projecting flanges adapted to support a small removable stamp in an upright position.
3. An inking pad having a removable cover with an opening of reduced dimensions therein, the edges of said opening being bent upwardly to form flanges whereby a stamp unattached to said cover may be supported by said flanges.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DENIS THOMAS OSULLIVAN. lVitnesses:
