Description
J. E. BOHAO. INKING PAD AND HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patenged May 20 UNITE TATES JOHANN EMANUEL BOHAO, OF
VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY.
INKING-PAD AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,242, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed June 13, 1889.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JOHANN EMANUEL BO- HAC, of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Pad and Holder for Inking Postal and other Stamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ink or color pads for stamping; and it has for its object to produce a pad which will absorb a small amount of color or ink, on which the color or ink will be prevented from hardening so quickly as on ordinary pads, which will not lose its elasticity through absorption of ink or color, which will deliver a regular amount of ink or color to the stamp, and which may be easily removed from its holder for the purpose of removing the ink-holding portion of the pad, the holder being so formed as to be capable of protecting the moist surface of the pad from dust when not in use.
The improved pad and holder constituting the invention is illustrated in plan at Figure 1, and in cross-section,on the line 00 y, Fig. 1, at Fig. 2; and said invention consists of a holder or shell A, of brass or other material, which receives the pad and its supportingbase, the four screws 0 serving to fix and hold the parts in the shell or holder A.
The base of the pad consists of a wood or other block f, into which the screws 0 are tapped. On the upper side of the block one or more thicknesses of card-board g are laid, and on these the pad proper d is cemented. The pad proper consists of ablock about half a centimeter thick and composed of gelatinous material, indiarubber, or other elastic non-absorbent substance, which is covered with one or more thicknesses of clot-h or other fibrous material. Upon this pad and its base is placed the holder or shell A, which has a vertical portion a, adapted to engage the base of the pad, and a horizontal portion a to en- Serial No. 314,152. (No model.)
gage the upper surface of the pad proper. The screws 0 are then inserted through the portion a into the base f of the pad and the parts secured together. The ink or color is then applied to the fibrous or cloth portion of the pad, distributed evenly over the surface and rubbed in, and the pad is ready for use. The pad proper consisting, mainly, of non-absorbent elastic material, whichis covered with fibrous material, it is evident that the color can only sink into the cloth or fibrous por tion, and that consequently much less color is used, and the removing of the cloth portion can be readily effected. The shell or holder is provided with a raised rim or flange 00, which extends above the ink-holding portion of the pad when the parts are secured together. Vhen the pad is not in use, the holder may be inverted and made to rest upon the rim or flange as, preventing the collection of dust on the moist surface, and the evaporation of the ink or color is also obviated to a considerable extent.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with an inking-pad con sisting of non-absorbent elastic material and I a covering of fibrous material, of a base adapted to support said pad, and a shell or holder having a horizontal rim or flange engaging the fibrous material on the upper face of said pad, and a vertical portion engaging said base and secured thereto by pins or screws, said shell or holder having a raised portion extending above the portion which engages the pad, whereby the pad and holder may be inverted and supported upon said raised portion, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOHANN EMANUEL BOI-IAO. WVitnesses:
Orro SOHIFFER, ANTON SKRIVANEKI.
