Description

R. D. sPEolg. VETERINARY DENTAL HALTER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 10, 1911.
Patented Oct. 10,1911.
nvemfoz l/Witness c a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT D. SPECK, OF ROCKFORD, WASHINGTON.
VETERINARY DENTAL HALTER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, ROBERT D. SPEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Spokane and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Dental Halters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a veterinary dental halter.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a halter of this character by means of which the head of the horse, or other animal, may be firmly held in any desired position during the operation of any dental work.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1. is a perspective view, illustrating the application of the halter. Fig. 2. is an elevation of the bands, and Fig. 3 a plan view of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, and which drawings are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale, the device comprises the nasal band 1, consisting of a flat strap of steel bent into the requisite form and provided on its inner surface with a lining of leather 2, or other suitable material conforming to the shape of the face. The device further comprises a second band 3, adapted to fit the lower jaw of the animal near the fifth molar, also provided on its inner surface with a lining 4:, of leather or other suitable material.
5 indicates the leather throat latch of the device, 6, the loop chin piece, and 7 the forehead strap. The ends of the bands 1 and 3 are provided with the outwardly bent extensions 8 and 9, respectively, through which pass the connecting bolts 10, provided at their lower ends with the thumb screws 11. Coil springs 12 are disposed around the connecting bolts between the ex tensions 8 and 9, the tendency of which is to spread apart or expand the sections 1 and 3.
In practice, the bands 1 and 3 may be easily slipped into position and then adjusted to the animals head by the thumb Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1811.

screws 11. To remove the bands from the animals head, it is only necessary to partially unscrew the thumb nuts 11 when the bands are slightly separated by the coil springs 12 and may be slipped off.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be readily seen that by connecting the hands together in the manner shown, they may be easily applied or removed or readily adjusted to accommodate different animals.
A chain, or rope, 13 is attached to the center of the band 1, and connected at its upper end to the loft, or other suitable support overhead, while a second chain or rope, 14, is attached to the center of the band 3 for connection with the floor. A chain and ring, 15 and 16, or a strap and roller, as preferred, are suitably connected with the extensions 8 and 9 at each side of the bands, 1 and 3, and are connected at their outer ends to suitable supports.
By means of the several chains or ropes just described, the horses, or other animals, head may be securely held in any desired position when using a dental float or in the course of any dental work, or operation in the mouth or throat, and the work made much easier and greatly facilitated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction and advantages of this device will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principles, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A veterinary dental halter, comprising a nasal band, a second band adapted to fit the lower jaw of the animal, means for adjustably connecting the ends of the bands together and resilient means tending to separate, or spread the bands farther apart.
2. A veterinary dental halter, comprising a nasal band, a second band adapted to fit the lower jaw of the animal, outwardly bent extensions at opposite ends of the bands, bolts passing through said extensions for connecting the bands together, thumb nuts screwing on the ends of the bolts,
means for supporting the bands from the animals head and means connected with the bands for holding the animals head in the desired position. 3. A Veterinary dental halter, comprising a nasal band, a second hand adapted to fitthe lower jaw of the animal, outwardly bent extensions at opposite ends of the bands, bolts passing through said extensions, nuts on the threaded ends of the bolts, springs disposed around the bolts between 1 the extensions, tending to separate or spread apart the bands, means for supporting the bands from the animals head and means connected with the bands for holding the animals head in the desired position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa' ture in presence of two Witnesses.
