Specification of Letters Patent :No-10,048, dated September 27, 1853.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, JORDAN L. Mo'r'r, of New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking Stoves and Ranges, and that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal, and Fig. 2, a cross section of a stove with my improvement applied. Fig. 3, separate views of the flue tubes with the improvement appended; and Fig. l, is a horizontal section just be low the top plate of the bottom flue.

In the stove described in Letters Patent granted to me bearing date the 12th of June 184:9, the products of combustion pass in a single sheet over the top of the oven and down the back, then pass through a series of flue tubes arranged side by side the bottom of the oven, and then return 1n a single sheet through a flue below; there being spaces left between the several flue tubes to permit the heat radiated by the entire surface of the flue tubes and the top plate of the flue below to circulate and pass up into the oven. The mode of construction of this stove heretofore practised, was to cast and connect together the several flue t-ubes, and to make, and put in the top plate of the bottom flue'separately. This mode of construction has given rise to two serious practical difhculties. The plate being cast or made separately and simply laid in its place toi give access to the flue below for cleaning it, warps and buckles, and hence is attended with diliiculty; but the most serious objection arises from the want of knowledge on the part of those using stoves and ranges on this plan. When the series of flue tubes are taken out for cleaning, the top plate of this bottom flue, looks like, and is often taken, by such persons, for the bottom plate of the stove and having cleaned the top of it, they replace the series of flue tubes, taking for granted that the whole of the flue space has been cleaned, while, in fact, they have left uncleaned the iue space which is most liable to be choked by soot and ashes. In this way stoves and ranges of this kind have often been rendered ineflicient in the baking part.

The object of my invention is to avoid the difficulties heretofore experienced and pointed out above, and to this end the nature of my invention consists in connecting the top plate of the bottom flue with the series of flue tubes, whether by casting the whole at once, or by attaching them together, so that in taking out the series of flue tubes for cleaning, the said top plate of the flue below shall be removed at the same time,

and thereby expose to view the iiue space below, while at the same time the said top plate will be prevented from warping and buckling. A

Various plans have been tried to facilitate the operation of emptying the grates of stoves, but so far as my knowledge eX- tends they are all attended with trouble, which prevents their successful use.

The object of the second part of my inl I vention, is toV produce a mode of liberating the grate, so that it shall clear itself of cinder, Svc., and combine therewith` a self acting catch to hold the grate in place, but

so arranged that its operation shall not Vbe impeded by the deposit of cinder and ashes. To this end the nature of this part of my invention consists in hanging the grate on journals at the sides and at or near the top front edge so that when liberated, the bottom of the grate will swing forward to discharge its contents freely, when this is combined with a lever catch, to catch and secure the bottom of the grate when pushed back, the said lever catch or latch working by the weight of its arm, and being fitted between projecting flanches on an inclined bottom plate which extends from the back of the ash pit, with a considerable slope to the ash receiver in the front apron, so that when the contents of the' grate are emptied, they will run down and leave the latch free to act when the grate is pushed back.

. In the accompanying drawings a, represents the series of bottom flue tubes arranged side by side with spaces b, b, between them; and c, a plate below and at some distance therefrom. All these are connected and held together by end plates al, d, so that they can be taken out and replaced through the door of the oven e, the plate c, when in place, constituting the top plate of the bottom flue f, below the flue tubes, and the spaces between `the several flue tubes, and between them and diagonal partition z', to a vertical Hue j, at'v the end of the oven, and out to the chimney. The diagonal position of this partition, en-

ables me to discharge the products of com bust-ion through a Hue at the ends and at right angles to the plane of the descending Hue, and at the same time to spread the heat over the entire surface of the bottom Hue,

c which could not be without this partition, as in that case the products of combustion would take the most direct line to the vertical Hue and leave an angle of the oven` Hue space greatly facilitating the operation without ecient heat.

The grate 7e, is formed with journals at I the end of the top front bar fitted to turn in the jambs.

be readily discharged, and the grate readplate is also formed with two Hanches between which is fitted a lever n, the upper end of which forms a latch to hold the grate in place, and the forward end is weighted to make the whole lever act as a self acting latch.

The Hanches protect the latch lever, so that ashes and cinder falling down will not clog the latch and prevent it from working.

I do not claim as my invention any particular mode of securing the top plate o the bottom Hue, to the series of Hue tubes, this may be. done in various ways; but

What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Connecting the top plate of the bottom Hue with the lower part of the series of Hue tubes, so that in taking out the series of Hue tubes for cleaning, the said to-p plate 01": the

Hue below, shall be removed at the same time, and thereby eXpose to view the lower of cleaning.

2. I do not claim hanging the grate irrespective of the combination as my invention; what I do claim as my invention is the combination of a swinging grate as described with the self-acting weighted latch connected with theplate below the grate as specified, whereby the contents of the grate can justed by a slight use of a poker.
