Description
J. 1. ANDERSON.
Cooking Stove.
No. 12,474? Patented March. 6.1855.
Lilli/fl IIII /Il/II-l/ III/I 1/11/11! N. PETERS. Fhololilhogmpher. wainin ton. D. C.
To all whomitlmayconcemg. I Be itknown that J. J. ANDERSON, of Beaver, inthe count Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking Stoves;
; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, refi erence being had to the annexed drawing,
. Figure 1 is a perspective VlBW of the K stove. Fig. 2 is a section perpendicular to axis of oven. Fig. 3 isuasection of stove on cleaning the return flue. v I
I make the stove inthe form of a flattened cylinder as showninthe drawing, and construct on one of its diameters an ovenrunning entirely through the stove, having an oval top and sides similar to the ordinary brick oven ;the top of the stove being fur.- nished with the usual openings for boilers and other utensils. n n l Y In the] drawing, A is the top, and B the ,base plates of thestove.
. v C is the cylindrlcalvertmal portion made up of several plates connected in the usual manners i Y v D D are the front doors, andE Eare fitheovendoors. ;f l v Running throughthestove on one of its diameters, is the oven 0, in form somewhat like a semi"ellipsoid truncated at eachextremity of its transverse axis, and similar H to the ordinary out door brick oven.. In
jfrontof the oven is f the fire chamber, containing the grate G; the fire back M of which rests on the outer surface of the oven, and is corrugated longitudinally, as seen in Fig. 2, for giving itstrength, and by'the holding of ashes in the corrugations adding to the durability of the plate. The
forming part of this specification, in which ipal object my invention is hearth so assto be readily removed for IoooK-srovn' Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,474, dated March 6,1855.
spaceabove the oven communicates with the return flues I I, and with the exit flue F when it is not closed by the damper H. The 7 sides a of the return flues I I are concentric with the circle of the stove and these passages communicate with the portion K of F; the rear of the ash box forms the front ofthe return flue; these flues being brought into action when the oven isin use for bak- 1ng.
J is the hearth and P the ash box connected therewith, so that the removalof the ash box will open the return flues, and no obstruction be offered by the hearth to observation and cleaning of the said flues. The top plate A has openings R for the usual cooking utensils, the number depending on the size of the stove.
The action of this stove is as follows.
The ellipsoidal form of the oven will cause the flame and current of heated air and gases, to passover its ends as well as the center, and thus heat to an equal degree all parts of the oven. The cylindrical form of the interior of the stove, prevents cooling and eddying corners, so-common in rectangular and other forms, and facilitates the draft by permitting an unbroken current from the fire chamber and over the ends of the oven. The return flues act as in other stoves of like nature to heat the bottom of the oven, and as their construction and operation are well known need not be here set forth. n l i V The oval or ellipsoidal oven of this stove heated as described, by giving an even degree of heat from all parts of its surface renders the baking qualities of this stove equal to those of the oval brick oven. The advantages which result from this form of oven are dependent to a great extent on the curved interior surface of the stove, for the proper deflection of the heated current so as to pass uniformly over the ends of the oven, and heated to an even degree the entir surface. This form of stove gives greater strength with less weight of metal than other forms, and also admits of the reception of a greater number of utensils. at the same time than other forms ofthe same size, thus rendering a small stove capable of serving the same purpose as a much larger one of another construction; and in this manner becomes an economizer of fuel.

the said return flue leading to the exit flue i What I claim as my invention and desire signed my name before two subscribing witto secure by Letters Patent, is nesses.
The construction of the ellipsoidahoven in stoves, as herein set forth, arranged in 5 contact at the front with the horizontally Witnesses:
corrugated fine back and detachable ash box. GEO. PATTEN,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto I JOHN L. SMITH.
