Description

' G. A. BEUHLBR.
DOOR HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED 1211.13. 1911.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
INVENTOR GEORGE A. BEUHLER, OF BELDEN, NORTH DAKOTA.
DOOR-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed April 13, 1911. Serial No. 620,850.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BEUHLER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Belden, in the county of Montraille and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to door hinges, and has special reference to barn door hinges or hinges adapted to be used with the doors of a building having a gable roof.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved hinge of this kind which will be simple in construction, strong and durable, and economical to manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawings :Figure l is an enlarged detail view in perspective of one of the members and a part of the other member of a hinge constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the upper portion of one end of a barn showing a hinge constructed in accordance with this invention and secured to a door thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a hinge constructed in accordance with this invention, and a portion of a door in cross section to which said hinge is secured and showing the door closed. Fig. 4 is a view of the hinge extended and connected to a portion of an open door. Fig. 5 is a detail view in cross section of one of the members of the hinge. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a hinge blank from which the hinge is formed.
In carrying out this invention, each member of the hinge is formed from a hinge blank cut out from a sheet of metal, as shown in Fig. 6. The blank is formed with the diagonal strips 1 having the short ends 2 formed with holes 2 for attaching the hinge and with the head portion 3 provided with an eye 4 and the central strip 5 from one end of which extends the diagonal struts 6 from the apex of which extends a short strip 7 having holes 2 for securing the hinge to a door. The blank thus described is bent into the shape of the complete hinge member Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the shown in Fig. 1. By bending the strips 1 and the short strips 2 at their ends at an angle to the strips 1 and by bending in the central strip 5 with its short end 7 at an angle it brings the braces 6 in diagonal position from the strips 1 to the strip 5. The other member'of the hinge is similarly formed except that its upper end is formed with a pair of eyes 8 between be seated in alinement therewith, and said eyes 8 and 4 are connected together by a pintle 9. One of the members of the hinge is secured to the wall of a barn 10 and the other to one of the doors 11 of the barn. The members of the hinge are of a considerable length and being curved, as shown, permit the door to swlng open and clear the gable of the barn. The hinge being formed of sheet metal as set forth, is light, strong, and durable owing to the curved members thereof, and the relative position of the strips 1 and 5 and the strut 6.
What I claim is 1. A hinge of the kind described, consisting of a pair of hinge members pivoted together, each of said members having a pair of longitudinal strips jointed at one end, and an intermediate strip projecting from the adjoining ends of said longitudinal strips and extending at an angle thereto, and struts extending between said strips.
2. In a hinge of the kind described, a hinge member formed from a sheet metal blank and consisting of a head portion having an eye, diagonal strips extending from said head portion, and curved longitudinally, each of said diagonal strips having a short lateral strip at its end, a central longitudinal strip extending from the apex of the diagonal strips, struts extending between said diagonal strips and the central strip and a lateral projection at the apex of said struts.
In testimony wherof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
