JOINT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK I-I. MCDON OUGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the art of carpentry and more particularly to an improved joint designed to take the place of the ordinary butt or tongue and grooved joints that have heretofore been commonly used in hingedly or fixedly connecting together two or more boards at their adjoining edges.
The invention has for its primary object an improved construction of joint of universal application in carpentry and allied trades, where if the parts he hingedly connected together, no crack or open space will be produced at the meeting edges through which light or air may pass and whereby should the parts be glued together, a surface of relatively large superficial area will be provided for the adhesive so as to render highly ei'licient and durable, the permanent connection of the parts.
A further object of the invention is an improved joint, the parts of which are so formed that they will be truly complemental one to the other, and thus resulting in economies, owing to the fact that only one knife or other cutter or form will be needed, the parts of the joints forming their own rights and lefts, this being a desideratum and of particular importance regarding flooring and partitions, because the boards can be run out in quantities and by taking two pieces of any length and simply reversing either one, an absolutely true, tight and locked joint may be formed. And the invention also aims to generally improve the art of the joiner and carpenter and to render it more useful and eflicient.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig-' nated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing and now particularly Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 1 designates two boards which may obviously be of any desired thickness, said boards be ing each formed at the joint with an edge which is so cut or otherwise shaped or formed as to produce in cross section, an intermediate ogee formation 2- and plane end portions 3 at the opposite ends of the ogee, said plane or straight end portions 3 lying in the same transverse plane. As will be hereinafter specifically described, this formation is laid out not on conventional, but on peculiarly novel lines, and it is so formed that, as clearly illustrated in the dotted lines of Fig. 3, when the joint is closed and the two boards 1 moved with their edges into interlocking engagement with each other upon the hinge or hinges 1-, no crack, crevice or other space can exist between the two boards 1, so that the screen, casement window, piano top or any other device in which the invention is embodied, vill be practically light, air, water and dust-proof.
As indicated at the outset of the specification, my invention is not limited to hinged joints, but to permanently connected joints, as, for instance, in the case of an interlocking column. An example of this is illustrated in Fig. 14,-, wherein the column sections are designated 5 and are formed at opposite edges with joint formations like that illus trated in Figs. 1 and 2. By reference to Fig. 41-, it will be seen that the adhesive is will be noted that the joint is not an ordinary bead but is derived from a series of arcs or parts of a circle and always drawn from a center point, the lines of the opposite beads being always concentric. For example, referring to the dotted lines in Fig. 5 and the reference letters used in connection therewith, it will be noted that the point A is the center for the intermediate are C and the remote end arc D of the ogee and that the point B at the opposite surface of the two boards forming the joint is the center for the other intermediate are E and the other end are F of the ogee. These are the main features of my improved joint. The edges 33 are in the same transverse plane and their outermost points are the centers for the respective arcs just above specified.
It is to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited in its use in any Wise, but is of universal application and that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim. It is also to be understood that my invention is not limited for use with wood, as it is equally applicable for use in connection with structures formed of iron or other substances or materials.
hat I claim is A joint of the character described, embodying complemental parts arranged edge to edge and each edge formed, correspondingly between its side faces and equally spaced from such faces with an ogee formation, the ends of which terminate in plane portions, the outer end of each plane portion being the center from which are struck the adjacent intermediate are of the ogee and the remote end are thereof.
