HASP-LOCK.

Be it known that I, YANoEY Q. CALD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paris, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hasp locks, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to. provide a combined lock and hasp, which does away with the necessity of the use of a pad lock or other means for securing the hasp to the staple.
A further object of my invention is to provide a lock having relatively few parts, and which is therefore not liable to easily get out of order. 7
A further object of my invention is to provide a lock which is strong and durable.
- Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined hasp and lock, and also of the key which is designed to lock and unlock the device, Fig. 2 is a View of the lock with the cover removed, the key and key poststem being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 2, showing the bolt or shackle in its unlocked position, Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3, the cover also being shown in section, Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the cam plate, the key post stem being shown in section, Fig. 6 is a view of the reverse side of the bolt or shackle plate from that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, Fig. 7 is a section along the line 77 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cam plate.
Referring now to Fig. 1, l have shown therein a hasp 1 provided with an eye2which may be attached to a "staple (not shown) or other suitable member. At one end of the hasp is a lock which comprises a hollow casing O having a cover D. The casing is pro vided with a slot E, the cover also being pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with asimilar registering slot E. The side 0 of the easlng C, opposite the cover, is
recessed at 0 (see Fig. 4) to receive the arms 7 and f of a cross-shaped cam plate, which I will denote in general by F (see Fig. 8). The portion 0 is also provided with a recess 0 running at right angles to the recess 0 in which the arms f and f of the cam plate are seated, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The cam plate is provided with a central recess f. The arm 7 is provided with a longitudinal stop lug f and an arc-shaped cam lug f while the arm f is provided with a similar longitudinal 111g f, and an areshaped lug 7. The cam plate is disposed in the grooves in the member C, as described, with the arms 7 and f disposed longitudinally of the hasp 1.
Adjacent the cam plate is, a circular plate G, having a concentric slot 9 extending along one edge, so as to provide an integral bolt or shackle H. The side of this plate, which is next to the cam plate, is shown in Fig. 6. As will be seen, it is provided with three alined slots 9, g and g and a similar slot 9' at right angles. The center of the plate is cut away at g, and there are two extensions of the opening 9 to wit: 9 and 9 these extensions being in line with the slots 9, g and g Adjacent theopening 9*, the plate G is cut away to form deep grooves g and g and shallow grooves g and g.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a key post K hav ing a stem ]t' arranged to extend into a socket 0* in the plate 0. This stem extends through the opening f in the cam plate F, and also through the opening 9 in the plate G. The key post is provided with a head 71: having a reduced portion $2 It is provided with slots 70*, as shown in Fig. 1. The cover plate D is provided with a central opening arranged to receive the head'lc of the key post K, and slots 03* arranged to register with the slots 70*, as shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be-readily understood.
In assembling the device, the cam plate F is placed in position in the recesses in the casing member a, as described. The shackle plate G is then placed in position, the key post is inserted, the stem 70 fitting in the socket c", as shown in Fig. 4:, after which the cover D is placed on the device and screwed down by means of the screws M.
The key S is shown in Fig. 1. It is provided with a central slot 8 and the side slots 8', 8 This leaves the lateral extensions 8 and 8*. The normal, position is that shown in Figs. 1 and2. In these figures, the device is in its locked condition. In order to unlock it, the key is inserted in the registering slots in the key post, and the cover, the extensions .9 and s entering the slots 9 and g in the shackle plate G, as shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of the key now rests on the arms f and f. The key is now turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. In
doing so it rides up the inclined edges of the cam members f and f of the cam plate F. During this movement the extensions 8 and s of the key are turning in the grooves g and g on the opposite side of the plate Gr (see Fig. 6). The stop lugs f and f of the cam plate F (see Fig. 5) normally extend into the respective grooves gg and 9 so that the plate cannot turn, but when the key rides up the cam members f and f, it lifts the shackle plate, so as to clear the stop lugs f and f On further turning of the key, the shackle plate itself will be engaged directly by the key, so as to be turned into the open position shown in Fig. 8. In this position, however, the key cannot be withdrawn because, as will be clearly seen from Fig. 3, the extensions 8* and s are now underneath the shackle plate G. The hasp may now be slipped over the staple or other member to which the hasp is to be locked, which is brought into the slot E. On the reversal of the key, the parts will return to their normal position, and now the slots 9 and g 71 and J are in registration, so that the key can be withdrawn. As already stated, however, it cannot be withdrawn unless the device is in its locked position. In order to drain the lock of any water which may have collected, I provide the openings L and L (see Fig. 2).
' g It will be seen from the above description that the lock is comparatively simple, since there are only three partswithin the casing, to wit: the cam, plate, the shackle plate and the key post, and of these three only two are movable. It is in the simplicity of the lock therefore, and the elimination of a multiplicity of parts that the merit of this invention lies, as well as the fact that these few parts are strong and durable and are not liable to get out of order.
The device described'may be used as a temporary lock, owing to theprovision of Jthe alined slots 9 in theplateand in the casing sides. 'This provides a hook-like portion-g", which maybe inserted in the staple "g similar tothe portion 9*, which may be inserted in the staple. The openings L and L are for the purpose of draining the lock of any water that may accumulate therein whether the lock is used as a right or as a left.
I claim 1. In a look, a casing provided with a stop, a movable shackle plate provided with a groove arranged to receive said stop, and means including a cam for raising said shackle plate out of engagement with said stop and for turning the plate.
2. In a lock, a casing provided with a stop, a movable shackle plate provided with a groove arranged to receive said stop, a cam, and a key adapted to engage said cam for lifting said shackle plate, so as to clear the stop and for rotating the plate.
3. In a lock, a casing provided with a groove or recess, a cam plate disposed within said groove or recess and provided with cams and stops, a shackle plate having grooves arranged to receive said stops and being provided with an opening for a key, and a key arranged to enter the opening in said shackle plate and adapted to engage said cams in its rotary movement and to cause the lifting of the shackle plate from the stops and by a further movement to rotate the shackle plate.
4. In a look, a casing provided with a slot for receiving a staple or eye and having a groove or recess on the interior of one of its walls, a cam plate disposed within said groove or recess, said cam plate being provided with a pair of stop members and a pair of cam members and said plate being provided with a central opening, a circular shackle plate having an arc-shaped slot extending from one edge to provide an arc shaped shackle, said shackle plate being provided with grooves on one side arranged to receive the stop members on said cam plate and being provided with key slots and a central opening, the seat post having a central stem arranged to project through said shackle plat-e, through said cam plate and being provided with key slots arranged to register. with the key slots in said shackle plate, and a key arranged to enter the registering key slots in said key post and said shackle plate and adapted to engage said cams for raising the shackle plate out of engagement wit-h said stops and for turning said shackle plate to cause the retraction of the shackle.
5. In a look, a circular casing provided with a slot for receiving a staple or eye and having a groove or recess on the interior of one of its walls, a camplate disposed within said groove or recess, said cam plate being provided with apair of stop members and a pair of arc-shaped cam members and being provided with a central opening, a circular shackle plate arranged to fit inside of said circular casing and having an arc-shaped slot extending from one edge to provide an arcshaped shackle, said shackle plate being provided with grooves on one side arranged to receive the stop members on said cam plate and being provided with key slots and a central opening, a seat post having a central stem arranged to project through said shackle plate, through said cam plate and beingjournaled in said grooved wall of the casing, said key post being provided with key slots arranged to register with the slots in said shackle plate, a cover arranged to receive one end of said key post and provided with key slots arranged to register with the slots in said key post, and a key adapted to enter the 15 in its further rotation to turn the shackle 20 plate to retract the shackle.
