To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plummer, in the county of Benewah and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of keyless padlocks and more particularly to a combination lock having a locking mechanism mounted within a cylindrical barrel whereby the keeper will be locked in position and which can only be released by one who has knowledge of the combination.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a keyless padlock which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the acompanying drawings, wherein is illus trated the preferred form of my invention, in which,

Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the body portion of the lock comprises a cylindrical barrel 1' closed at its bottom with a wall 2 and open at its top end. The open end of the barrel is provided with a closure plate 3 having the depending annular flange 4: fitting into an annular groove 5 formed at the upper edge of the barrel 1. Integrally formed with the edge of the closure plate 3'is an annular ver tical flange 6 provided with a cut-out portion 7 the purpose of which will be presently described.

The closure plate 3 is also provided with a central circular opening through which the upper end of the locking bolt 10 is extended and the extreme upper end of the locking bolt carries an arcuate keeper member 11 having the downwardly extending obliquely disposed keeper arms 12. The terminals of the keeper arms 12 are in sliding contact with the upper surface of the closure plate 3 thus permitting the locking bolt 10 to be rotated while the ends of the arms 12 slidably contact with the upper surface of the closure plate.
Two locking disks 18 and 14 are fixed within the barrel 1 and disposed in superposed relation and have central apertures for receiving the locking bolt 10. The disk 13 is disposed above and in spaced relation to the bearing plate 8 and is provided with three radially extending slots 15 equally spaced apart and communicating with the central opening in the said disk. Extending radially from the locking bolt 10 is a plurality of lockingpins 16, three in number, and are spaced from the lower end of the locking bolt at a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the bearing plate 8 whereby the pins will be normally above the plate 8 when the locking bolt is in locked position. The disk 14 is also provided with three radially extending slots 17 communicating with the central opening in the disk and these slots 17 are arranged so as to be out of vertical alinement with the slots 15 in the lower disk 13 as clearly shown by Fig. 4: of the drawing.
In operating the lock, the person who has knowledge of the combination, will rotate the keeper 11 thereby also rotating the looking bolt 10 until the locking pins 16 are disposed in alinement with the slots 15 in the disk 13. The person operating the lock will, of course, have to have knowledge of the combination, and this knowledge will include the position which the keeper should assume when the pins 16 are alined with the The locking bolt may then be raised, the locking pins 16 passing through the slots 15 and a further rotation of the locking bolt, to the proper point, will cause the pins 16 to be moved into vertical alinement with the slots 17 in the disk 14. The locking bolt may then be further raised to a height sufficient to permit the keeper arms 12 to be withdrawn from the hasp or staple to which it has been attached. The
cut-out portion 7 permits the arms to be easily withdrawn from the hasp or staple to which they are attached when the lock is in applied position. It will be noted that in the position shown by full lines with one of the arms of the keeper alined with the center of the depression 7. When the front arm of the keeper is moved around to the right to the position shown by dotted lines marked first position, the pin 16 will be alined withthe slots 15. When the bolt is then lifted, and the arm turned to the 'oppo site direction to the position indicated by dotted lines marked second position, the pin 16 will be alined with the slots 17 and the bolt may then be again raised.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable keyless padlock has been provided, thedetails of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A lockcomprising a barrel having a closure plate mounted on its open end, a cylindrical rotatable locking bolt disposed centrally in the barrel, a bearing plate mounted in the bottom of the barrel for receiving one end of the said rotatable bolt, a plurality of locking pins carried by the said locking bolt, and means arranged within the barrel for providing a staggered passage through which the said locking pins must pass when the said bolt is extracted.
2. A look comprising a barrel of cylindrical formation having a closure plate mounted on one end and provided with a central circular opening, a cylindrical lock- 7 ing bolt disposed centrally within the barrel,
closure plate, and; means forming a staga keeper of arcuate formation having obliquely disposed arms the terminals of which contact with the surface of the said gered passage for preventing the extraction of the locking bolt from the barrel.
3. A lock comprising a barrel of cylindrical formationhaving a closure plate mounted on one end" and provided with a central-circular opening, a cylindrical locking bolt disposed centrally within the barrel, a keeper of arcuate formation carried by the said locking bolt and having obliquely disposed arms the terminals of which contact with the surface of the said closure plate, a plurality of locking pins carried by the said locking bolt, and means arranged within the barrel for preventing the extraction of the locking bolt and providing a staggered passage for the said-lo'ckmg pins. 7 7
4. A look comprising a barrel of -cylindrical formation having a. closure, plate central circular opening, a cylindrical locking bolt disposed centrally within the barrel, a keeper of arcuateformation carried by the said locking boltand having obliquely disposed arms the terminals of which contact with the surface of the said 'closureplate, a plurality of locking pins carried by the said locking bolt, a plurality of disks mounted within the barrel and provided with radially extending slots adapted topermit the passage of the said locking pins centrally through the barrel.
5. A lock comprising a barrel of cylindrical formation having a closure plate mounted ononeend and provided with a mounted on one end and provided with a central circular opening, acylindrical locking bolt disposed centrally Within the barrel, a keeper of arcuate formation carried by the said locking bolt and having obliquely disposed arms the terminals of which contact with the surface of the said 7 closure plate, a plurality of locking pins carried by the said lockingbolt, a'plurality of disks mounted within the barreland provided with radially extending slots adapted to permit the passage of the'said locking pins centrally through the barrel, the said disks being arranged in superposed relation to each other and each disk having radially extending slots in the same spaced relation to each other as the said locking pins, the slots in one disk being out of alinement with the slots in the adjacent disk.
