This invention relates to fastening devices, known generically as locks, and more particularly 'to portable types, as padlocks of permutative character in which no key is required.
It is an object of the present inventionto provide a compact lock of this type, which, by reason '01 its construction, effectually resists all attempts at 'socalled picking or surreptitious attempts" at opening, short of actual destruction. f
c A further feature is in the provision of a keyless lock in which the operative elements aremechanica lly actuated by positive means-, no springs or 1 resilient parts being employed.
Another purpose is to produce a lock of exceptional strength, economically manufactured and not readily liable to disorganization.
These and other advantageous objects are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and, arrangement of 7 parts as hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which: p v

The structu're embodies a casing l0 havinga circular wall and integral flat side I], opposite I which the narrow wall is recessed to receive a bezel 12 held permanently in position by spinningthe thin material over it, as at I 3.
The bezel I2 retains in rotative engagement,

Integrally formed on the cylindrical, surface of the casing ID, at a spaced distance apart, are lugs 11 and [8 extending to a uniform height. "On the inner side of the casina'in register with the lug I8, is a corresponding lug I9, these lugs'all being 50 bored to receive the legs or parallel bar elements 20--2l of a curved shackle orlocking member 22. Thisshackle is of circular cross section, the shorter leg ZUcontainlng in its inner edge a recess .23 adjacent its extremity, while, in the opposite -leg-;2l. is a recess 24, this longer-leg extending normally through the lugs l8|9 and being provided with a stop ring 25.
Engageable in the recess 23 is a bolt 26, formed on an arm of a bell-crank lever 21 held by a shouldered pivot screw 28 to the wall I l of the casing 5 but spaced therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3.
Another arm of the bell-crank lever 21 is provided with an upstanding lug 29 to be contacted 'by the bottom of the leg 29 when the shackle is in its lowermost position, thereby locking the 10 bolt 26 in'a holding position. within the recess 23.
Another arm of the bell-crank lever is provided with an upstanding detent 30, the purpose of which will later appear.
' A fourth arm 3|, of the bell-crank lever 21, has 1-5 pivoted at its extremity an angular deflector 32, provided with a finger 33; the deflector 32 being adapted to operate in a pocket 34 formed in the casing by a lug 35 having an angular upper edge.
A plain straight lever 31, having a depending lug 38, is mounted on a pivot 39 at a point nearly opposite the pivot 28. One end of the lever 31 is adapted to enter the recess 24 in the longer leg 2! of the shackle when the same is in a closed position, and is moved into the recess 24 by reason of the opposite end of the lever contacting with the detent 30 of the bell-crank lever 27 when raised, thus'locking both legs of the shackle simultaneously.
A post40 extends inwardly from the lower wall ll of the casing centrally thereof, the post having a hub 4| on its lower end while its upper end reaches into an axial recess 42 in the knob l5.
Revolubly mounted on the post 40, to rest upon the hub 4|, is a tumbler disc 44 above which are other similar discs 45 and 46; a down reaching pin 41 being fixed in the lower side of the disc 44 and an upstanding pin 48 in its upper side, as seen in Fig. 2. A pin 49 extends upwardly from 440 the uppermost disc 46 to engage in a recess in the knob l5 and the intermediate disc 45 is provided with pins to translate movement from the disc 46 to the disc 44.
These discs are also provided, at a point in their periphery, midway, ,with narrow? radial slots 50 engageable by the detent 30 of the bellcrank lever, these slots being arranged with reference to thepins, which are adapted to rotate within the confines of spacer arms 52 disposed 50 intermediate the discs, these spacers being anchored by extensions 53 set in an undercut slot 54 formed in a thickened portion of the casing wall opposite the shackle.
1 -By referring to Figure 2, it will benoted that #55 when the shackle elements are pressed inwardly of the casing, the end of the leg 20 will contact the lug 29, turning the bell-crank lever releasing the detent 30 from the slots 50 of the several discs 44-45-46 and at the same time causes the lever 31 to enter the recess 24 in the longer leg 2| of the shackle, and furthermore, due to the shape of the deflector 32 causes its finger 33 to contact the pin 41 of the lowermost disc, thereby moving the slots out of the path of movement of the detent 30, locking the device.
It will also be noticed that when the device is opened-that is when the shackle 22 is withdrawn, the lower part of the leg 2| prevents the lever 31 from being turned on its pivot and thus prevents the detent 30 from being withdrawn from slots 50 until the shackle is slid home This likewise prevents the knob !5 from being turned off combination while the device is open.v
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the body of a container 60, such as a desk, chest or trunk, is provided with a cover 6| in which are secured opposed bolts 62 having recesses 63 of a nature similar to the recesses 2324 of the shackle 22.
These elements are adapted to enter corresponding openings in the wall of the container, to engage in projecting lugs ll', I8 of a. lock of the type described, composed of a casing l0, dial I4 and knob l5, all the interior elements being of the same type as previously described.
Although the improvements have been described with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of the invention, it is not desired to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A look mechanism associated with a casing and comprising a shackle having parallel leg elements of unequal length enterable in said casing, both leg elements having notches in their inner surfaces, means on the longer of said legs to prevent extraction, a lever pivoted in said casing to be oscillated by contact with the shorter of said legs when fully entered, a bolt on said lever to engage in the notch of the shorter leg, a second lever pivoted in said casing engageable in the notch of the longer leg, and means on said first lever to cause said engagement of the second lever simultaneously with engagement of said bolt.
2. A springless lock mechanism associated with a casing and comprising a shackle having leg elements of unequal length enterable in said casing, both leg elements having notches in their inner surfaces, means on one of said legs to prevent extraction, a lever pivoted in said casing to be oscillated by contact with the shorter of said legs when fully entered, a bolt integral with said lever to engage in the notch of the shorter leg, a second lever pivoted in said casing engageable in the notch of the longer leg, and manually operable, permutative means to control movement of said first lever.
3. A springless lock mechanism associated with a casing and comprising a shackle having parallel legs of unequal length enterable in said casing, each leg containing a single notch in its inner surface, means on the longer of said legs to prevent extraction, a' lever pivoted in said casing to be oscillated by contact with the shorter of said legs when fully entered, a bolt on said lever to engage in the notch of the shorter leg, a second lever pivoted in said casing engageable in the notch of the longer leg, means on said first legs slidable in bored openings in said lugs, one
of said legs being longer than the other and adapted to rotate in its opening, and each leg containing a single notch in its inner surface means to prevent complete withdrawal of said shackle from said casing, a lever pivoted in said casing, said lever having an arm extending into 7 the path of the shorter leg, a bolt on said lever to-engage in the shorter leg notch, a detent on said lever, a series of apertured discs revoluble axially in said casing, said discs being interengaged to operate in sequence, manual means to rotate said discs into known relation thereby to receive said detent, and means pivoted on said lever to move said discs out of registration when said bolt is engaged inthe notch of the shorter leg. r
5. A springless lock mechanism associated with a casing and comprising a shackle enterablein said casing, a leverpivoted in said casing'to be oscillated by contact with a leg of the shackle when fully entered, a bolt integral with said lever to lock the shackle against withdrawal when fully entered, a series of permutative discs having registerable slots, a detent integral with said lever enterable in the slots whenalined, but normally resting adjacent their peripheries, means for manually causing registration of the disc slots and positively actuated means carried by the lever to automatically rotate atv least one of the discs upon rocking of the lever in one direction. 6. A springless lock mechanism associated with a casing and comprising a shackle enterable in said casing, a lever pivoted in said casing to be oscillated by contact with a leg of the shackle when fully entered, a bolt integral with said lever to lock the shackle against withdrawal when fully entered, a series of permutative discs having registerable slots, a detent integral with said lever enterable in said slots when alined, but normally resting adjacent their peripheries, means for manually causing registration of the disc slots and a positively actuated pivoted element carried by the lever to automatically rotate at least one of the discs, upon rocking of the lever in one direction;
'7. In a combination padlock having a locking bolt lever and a series of tumblers for controlling the actuation of the lever, the combination with the tumblers of a mechanism actuated solely by positive motion comprising a tumbler deflector and means to operate said deflector so that at least one'of the tumblers will be automatically moved upon rocking of the lever in one direction.
8. In a combination padlock having a locking bolt lever and a series of tumblers for'controlling the actuation of the'lever, the combination with the tumblers of means actuated solely by positive motion, carried by the locking bolt lever, and means cooperating therewith to effect automatic rotation of at least one of the tumblers upon rocking of the lever in one direction.
9. In a combination padlock having a locking bolt lever and a series of tumblers for controlling the actuation of the lever, the combination with the tumblers of a member freely pivoted to said lever, to be positively rotated about its pivot, when the lever is rocked in one direction, to rotate at least one of the tumblers.
10. In a. lock, the combination of a lock case, a
shackle mounted to slide in the lock case, a
shackle retainer for limiting the outward movement of the shackle, tumbler mechanism provided with a plurality of gatings adapted to register with each other, a bolt pivotally mounted in the casing adapted to engage the toe of the shackle when the shackle is moved into the lock case, and to lock said shackle in the casing when r 1 said tumbler gatings are out of register; said bolt, when said tumbler gatings are in register, being permitted to turn to release the toe of the shackle; and a device'in operative engagement with said bolt to move into locking engagement with the heel portion of the shackle when said bolt is moved into locking engagement with the toe'of the shackle.
' f 11. In a lock, the combination of a lock case, a
shackle mounted to slide in the lock case, a looka ing bolt assembly adapted, when the shackle toe is moved into the look case, to be actuated by the shackle to position said locking bolt assembly in looking engagement with both the toe and heel of the shackle; and tumbler mechanism for retaining the bolt assembly in said locking engagement with the toe and heel of the shackle, and
adapted to be positioned to permit release of said bolt assembly from locking engagement with the shackle.
12. In a lock, the combination of a lock case, a

In combination, a lock-case, a shackle, a bolt adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the shackle when the shackle is moved into the lock-case, tumbler mechanism having a plurality of gatings which when the gatings are in alinement hold the bolt in looking engagement with the shackle, a pawl in pivotal connection with said bolt, means operable to move said pawl with relation to said bolt and to translate said pawl, when said bolt is in motion, operably to cause said pawl to actuate said tumbler mechanism to move the gatings out of register.

In a lock mechanism, the combination of a lock-housing, a locking member mounted to move with respect to said housing, a bolt adapted to be engaged by said locking member in a manner to move into locking engagement therewith, when said locking member is moved in one direction; tumbler mechanism which when in one position permits the bolt to be moved to release said locking member, and when the mechanism is out of said position holds the bolt in looking engagement with said locking member; means to retain said tumbler mechanism in said release position when said locking member is moved in another direction, and means cooperating with means carried by said bolt for moving said tumbler mechanism to said position in which the bolt is held in looking engagement with said locking member.

In a lock, the combination of a lock housing, a shackle mounted to move with respect to the lock-housing, a bolt adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the shackle when the shackle is moved in one direction, tumbler mechanism which when in one position permits the bolt to be moved to release the shackle and when the mechanism is out of said position holds the bolt in looking engagement with the shackle, a pawl carried by said bolt and adapted, when said bolt is moved, to actuate movement of said! tumbler mechanism, operably to move said mechanism to said position in which the bolt is held in looking engagement with the shackle.

In a lock, the combination of a locking member adapted to move in a plurality of directions; a bolt adapted to be engaged by said look-- ing member in a manner to move into locking engagement therewith when said locking member is moved in one direction; tumbler mechanism which when in one position permits the bolt to be moved to release said locking member, and when the mechanism is out of said position holds the bolt in looking engagement with said locking member, means to'retain said tumbler mechanism in said release position when said locking member is moved in another direction, and a pawl deriving motion from the motion of said locking member and adapted to move said tumbler mechanism to said position in which the bolt is held in locking engagement with said locking member.
