ANDREW E GRAHAM. FHUTGUYHDWASHINGTON, B .A
UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-ICE.
THOMAS D. SCRUGGS, OF FLORENCE, ALABAMA.
PERM UTATlON-PADLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,155, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed October 6, 1894. Serial No. 525,157. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS D. ScEUGGs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Lauderdale, State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Locks,of which the following is aA full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved padlock; and it consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and reliable combination-padlock having changes of combination. This I accomplish by means of a new combination of a lever-hasp, in connection with disks or tumblers having radial slots, one of which tumblers is made with a spindle integral with it, solely for the purpose of securing a means of changing combination on the outside.
Reference is to be had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a view of case with hasp A in locked position and showing tumbler D in alinement 011 center-post b. Fig. 2 is the lock-case, with center-post b', having in its upper part the socket b for the shorter spindle f" of tumbler F, Fig. 6. Fig. 3 is the front plate or cover of the lock-case. Fig. 4 is one of the tumblers, having a radial slot d and groove or slot d. Fig. 6 is the other tumbler, (the lock in this case having but two,) having a radial slot f"" and a lug or pin f, also having a spindle with a square part f', which spindle may be made integral with the tumbler or otherwise immovably secured to it, as shown in this figure. In Fig. 7 G is a washer used to separate the two tumblers D F. The screw I, with a washer J, secures the dial-knob E, Fig. 5, to the square part f of the spindle or tumbler F. Fig. 8 is the lever-hasp, having a wedge-shaped lift a.
The case B has a center-post b of the'length of the combined thicknesses of the tumbler D and the washer G. Upon this center-post the tumbler D and washer G revolve, as in Fig. l. The center-post b has a socket b for the reception of the part f of spindle of tumbler F, and the part f3 of spindle of tumbler F is inserted through opening c of front plate O, so that the round part f of the spindle may turn in opening c', the lug f" engaging with slot d of tumbler D. The dial-knob E, with its square aperture e, made to embrace square part f of spindle of F, is secured thereon by means of a washer J and screw I.
The top O is secured to the case by means of pins .9 s s s, which are riveted after being inserted through holes tt t t of the top C.
The alinement of the radial slots dfm of the tumblers D and F with the wedge-shaped part a of the lever-hasp A is effected by turning the dial-knob E to the right, when the lug or pin f" of the tumbler F thereby engages the end of the groove or slot d/ of tumbler D, by which means the tumbler D may be revolved far enough to effect the alinement of the radial slot CZ of tumbler D with the radial slot 'W' of the tumbler F. By turning to the left the slot d of tumbler D is left in alinement with the wedge-shaped lift a of the hasp A, said slot d being so situated upon the periphery as to come into line with the wedgeshaped lift a before lug f reaches the other extremity of slot d. of the other tumbler D.
The two radial slots d f being in alinement with the wedge-shaped lift a of leverhasp A, the hasp may be elevated for opening the lock or depressed for locking it, the tumblers D and F being revolved by the wedge-shaped lift a entering the alined slots (l fm. When hasp A is closed, as in Fig. 1, any turn to right or left of the tumblers D or F will throw slots d and fm out of alinement, when the wedge-shaped lift a of the hasp will be kept locked by the peripheries of tumblers.
To change the combination, the screw I of the spindle of tumbler F is taken out and the knob-dial E turned relatively one-fourth, onehalf, or three-fourths around and replaced upon spindle and again made fast by the screw I in the hole f".
Where for any reason the change of combination may be undesirable, the screw I may have the slot by which it is turned led off after being securely inserted, and the dialknob E be thus fixed immovably to the spindle of tumbler F.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination with the rear case-plate IOO provided with a receptacle for the tuinblers,` VWedge-shaped lift a; the Cover-plate ortop for and a center-posh having a socket for the holdin-g the parts in place and the dial-plate Io shorter spindle portion of the tumbler F, the or indicator-plate, substantially as Specified. longer part of said spindle portion being reetangular in cross-section at f, the tumbler F THOMAS D. SCRUGGS. having the radial slot fm and the pin f", d Vitnesses:
the tumbler D having radial slot CZ and inp J. A; MCKINSEY,
termal curved slot d', the hasp having the J. T. VORLEY.
