To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in stamping devices. 7
The objects of the invention are,-(1) to provide means by which the handle element of the stamping device may be readily attached to, and detached from, the stamp or marking device proper; (2) in providingthe rear, back, or upper surface of the detachable stamping element or die with a facsimile of the same reading matter as that on the face or printing side of the stamping element, and in arranging this reading matter on the rear or upper side of the stamp directly over the letters of the printing type or the face side, whereby the user is greatly assisted in positioning the stamp before effecting the stamping operation, as he can manner, that is from left providing the detachable handle and stampelement with inter-engaging devices, whereby the handle element is accurately positioned with relation to its stamp, and also providing means for detaching the stamp.

Heretofore, it has been a common practice, when a large number of stamps are in use, to provide each stamp with a handle fixedly secured thereto, and means for holding or supporting these stamps in a suitable holding rack. This practice is objectionable as frequently the wrong stamp is selected and Such mistakes often occur by reasonof the fact that the user is obliged to read the printing type backward and often in an inverted position. My improvement is designed to overcome these objections by employing a single handle element that can be readily attached to any stampwhen occasion for its use arises, and further, in placing any suitable number of the stamping elements face downward in contact with the inking pad whereby the subject matter on the rear or upper surface of the stamp can be easily read by the user without any danger of selecting the wrong stamp, as will be fully described in the body of the specification.

Broadly stated, my invention consists in providing the rear or upper surface of the stamping element with means by which the handle can be readily attached to, and detached from, the stamp, or printing die.
The stamping element preferably consists of a thin die or other element of rubber which has the stamping characters molded or cast therein.
In the drawings forming part of this application,Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view on line 11 of Fig. 2, showing the internal construction of the handle element. Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view on the line 22, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 illustrating another means of attaching and positioning the handle on the stamp,the section being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse, sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6 through the stamping element, showing clearly the arrangement of the printed matter on the rear side of the stamp as being in the same Vertical alinement as the type elements on its face side. Fig. 6 is a view showing the detached stamp on the inking pad, the rear or upper side of the stamp being toward the observer. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the cage element.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a designates the handle portion proper which is provided with a cavity or hollow portion Z) for receiving a permanent magnet c, preferably'of the horseshoe type, the poles (Z and e of which extend nearly through, and substantially flush with, the outer surface of the elastic pad or cushion 7 which is attached to the backing 9 that is attached to the handle a in any suitable manner. Located between the upper portion of the mag net 0 and the inner top portion of the handle is a coiled spring h, the purpose of which is to normally project or move the poles of the magnet outward when the stamping element is detached.
The stamping element, which is preferably made in the form of a flat thin piece of rubber, is designated at i, the integral raised letters or type being shown at j. Printed on the reverse or upper side of the stamping element 2' is a facsimile of the same reading matter as that contained on the face or type side of the stamp, as shown at Z:
,in Figs. 5 and 6. It will be particularly noticed that this reading matter is directly over the printing type and that the letters and words are arranged in the ordinary readable manner that is from left to right. This feature, it will be seen, greatly facilitates the user of the stamp in selecting the correct stamp without any chances of making a mistake. Further, this arrangement, enables or assists the user very much in correctly positioning the stamp prior to the printing operation. In order to enable the operator to pick up a stamp, I secure to the rear side of the same a small piece of soft iron, as shown at m. The attachment is made by means of cement or in any suitable manner, as by vulcanization. The stamping element consists therefore of substantially a one-piece member. The piece of soft iron m is merely for the purpose of afiording means for attaching, detaching, tioning the stamping element.
Slidably mounted between and Within the poles of the magnet is a rod 0 that is provided with a button element p for enabling the operator to move the rod 0 upward and downward. This rod, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is adapted to register or enter a recess g in the piece of soft iron at whereby the soft iron is accurately positioned with reference to the poles of the magnet, and the flat, thin stamp element is accurately positioned on the cushion element 7.
In operation, when it is desired to pick up a stamp, the operator, by means of the button 29, enter the recess 9,- ward on the handle, the rod is moved upward and the stamp is lifted by reason of the iron member being attracted to the poles of the magnet, as readily understood. The operator can then effect the printing in the usual manner. The stamp may be detached from the magnet m by simply pressing downward on the button 79 of the rod 0, permitting the stamp to fall onto the inking pad, if desired, as shown in Fig. 6 at 1.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 7, the lower end of the rod 0 is provided with a frame or cage-like element .9 which is adapted to engage or pinch, if desired the opposite sides of the bar at as shown in these figures. The stamp being picked up by, and dropped from, the poles thereof in the same manner as that described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2. The rod 0 is guided in the handle a by means of the slot in the piece t. When the cage-like element 8 is employed, the sides of the piece of soft iron at may be pinched by the "element and the flat, thin, stamp element retained in position on the cushion f without the assistance of the magnet 0.
While I have described magnetic means to accomplish the ready attachment and detachment of the stamp to the handle, I do and posimoves the rod 0 outward so as to then by pressing down not limit myself to the exact construction shown, as I may employ any of the well known equivalents for accomplishing the same results, as pincers for grasping the opposite sides'of the bar at similar to the cage elements. It will therefore be seen that my stamp provides a detachable die in which the inscription that is to be printed is readable directly on the back of the die.
WVhat I claim, is
1. A stamping device comprising a stamp element, a handle for operating the same, an armature element having a recess therein and mounted on the stamp element, and a magnetic device mounted in the handle, whereby the stamp and handle may be held together for effecting the stamping, and slidable means for engaging a recess in the armature element for detaching the stamp from the handle.
2. In a hand-stamping device, the combination with the handle thereof, of an axially arranged slidable element mounted therein and adapted to be engaged by the user, a stamp element, means on the stamp element with which the slidable element engages when said element is pushed down for determining the position of the stamp element and for disengaging the stamp element from the handle when the slidable element is withdrawn, as described.
3. In a hand-stamping or printing device, the combination with the handle thereof, of a detachable one-piece stamping element, said element containing a facsimile of the same subject matter on the upper and lower sides of the same, means comprising a bar element directly on the stamping element, and means engaging the bar element for attaching and detaching the stamping element to the'handle, and for determining the position of said element.
4. In a hand-stamping device, the combination with the handle thereof, of a magnetic member mounted within the handle, a stamping element, an armature mounted upon the stamping element and adapted to engage the poles of the magnetic member, and means for moving the armature away from the poles, and for positioning the armature with relation to the poles.
5. A hand-stamping device comprising a handle member, a detachable, flat, one-piece stamping element having a facsimile of the inscription directly on the back of the stamping element, means associated with said handle for grasping and holding the stamping element and axially slidable means mounted in the handle for engaging the stamping element for detaching said element from the handle, as described.
6. In a hand-stamping device, the com bination with the handle thereof, a detachable one-piece printing or stamping element, means associated with said element and mounted in the axis of the handle for attaching and detaching the stamping element from the handle at Will, said one-piece stamping element being labeled on its upper side with the same inscription as that on its face or printing side, whereby the inscription can be read on its upper side When described.
