TIME-STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,244, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed May 25, 1903. Serial No. 158,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK L. SCHULZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time Stamps; and I do herebydeclare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and u se the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a time stamp, the object being to provide a simple, durable, and eicient device of this character; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying.T drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a central vertical section of a time-stamp constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 isa plan section of same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail side elevation of same.
My said device comprises an inverted cup A, on the outer' face of the flange B of which a dial is imprinted. Within said iiange an annular dial C, of rubber or other suitable material, is rigidly mounted, which registers with the dial on the outer face of said flange B Pivotally mounted in said cupAconcentrically therewith is a disk D, upon the lower face of which a printing pad or block E is mounted, such pad or block being provided with spaces to receive type F. Said disk is further provided on one edge with a downwardly-extending projection G, provided in its .free end with a wedge-shaped recess H,
adapted to receive atriangular block I, which is securely clamped therein by contracting said recess H and which is adapted to print a representation of the hand or pointer of a clock to indicate on the dial C. Said disk and cup are provided with corresponding annular grooves .I to receive balls K, interposed between said disk and said cup. Said disk is provided on its upper face with a central externallythreaded stem L, which passes through a central opening in the cup A and receives a nut M, which is adapted to bear upon the upper face of said cup to adjust the disk in position therein. The upper end N ceives the inner end of an arm or lever O of greater thickness than the depth ot' said square end N. In the center of said stem L and its square end N is a lthreaded recess P, which receives the .threaded stem Q of the handle R, said stem Q being secured in the lower end of a rubber cylinder S, which is secured at its other end in the lower end of said handleR, said rubber cylinder servingto enable an impression to be made even though the handle be not held perpendicularly to the surface to be printed upon. The free end of said arm or lever C is bent over and pointed to indicate on the dial on the outer face ofthe flange B the position of said end of said arm corresponding in position with the pointer or block I on the disk D and indicatingthe same point on the dial; Adjacent the flange B said cup A is provided with an annular row of recesses T, corresponding in number with the divisions of the dials and in radial aliner'nent therewith. Said arm or lever O is provided adjacent its free end with an opening U, which is surrounded by a Vertical sleeve V. A pin W, provided at its upper end with a button X, passes through said sleeve and said opening U and enters said recesses T in the upper wall of said cup A, said pin being provided adjacent its lower end with a collar Y, between which and the upper Wall of said sleeve V a spring Z is interposed which normally holds said pin at the lower limit of its movement.' It will be noted that said arm C is rigid with the disk D and that its inner end is compressed upon the nut M by thestern Q, thereby servin g the purpose of a lock-nut to prevent said nut M from turning. y
When it is desired to set the device to print the hour, the handle R is grasped in one hand and the pin W withdrawn from the recess engaged thereby, and with the other hand the cup A is revolved until the free end of the hand registers with the desired point in the dial on the flange of said cup. lThe said pin W is then released and enters the desired recess T, thereby securely holding the disk and cup in relative positions. The said hand O is so arranged relatively to the printed matter on the disk that when the impression is made so that the said hand points toward the upper end of the sheet the impression made will read from left to right of the sheet.
I claim as my invention- In a device of the kind specified, the conibination with a central member carrying an impression -pointer, an inverted concentric cup rotatably mounted on said central member and carrying an impression-dial and a corresponding adjusting dial, balls inter posed between said members, a threaded stem on said central member having a reduced square end, a nut on said stem engaging said cup, a lever of greater thickness than the depth of said square end of said stem inserted over the latter, a central threaded opening in said stem, a handle having a threaded shank ladapted to enter said opening, and
