Description
J. WALKER, J11. FILE, TEMPORARY BINDER, LOOSE LEAF BOOK, AND THE LIKE. APPLICATION I'I LED 11011.25, 1910.
W/T/VfSSES: I I/VVE/VTOR:
COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH 60-. WASHINGTON D c FILE, TEMPORARY BINDER, LOOSE-LEAF BOOK, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed November 25, 1910.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WALKER, Jr., of Farringdon House, Warwick Lane, London, England, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Files, Temporary Binders, Loose-Leaf Books, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to files, temporary binders, loose leaf books, and the like, of the type comprising two plates, of which one is adapted to slide upon the other, two or more prongs disposed on one and adapted to mate with similar prongs on the other, when the file is in its closed or normal position, and pins on one plate adapted to travel in slots in the other and to coact therewith when one plate is slid in relation to the other.
In accordance with this invention the plate which is attached to the file, book or binder is bent over to form a groove in which the edge of the other plate lies when the parts are in the closed position; the effect of this improvement is to keep the papers or loose leaves from pressing on the sliding plate and getting caught or cut thereby.
Referring to the drawings :Figure l is a plan of one form of file made in accordance with this invention in the open position; Fig. 2 is an end View; Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 in the closed position.
In the form shown in the drawings, the plate a which is fixed to the file, book or binder, is flanged or bent over on itself at b so as to form a groove 0 along one edge of the said plate. The under plate a is provided with slots cl and with filing prongs e which pass through the bent over .part b. The sliding plate is provided with pins 9 which engage and travel in the slots d of the fixed plate a and with filing prongs h which are adapted to mate with the prongs e on the fixed plate a. The upper plate f is cut away at to allow the upper plate f to pass the prongs e. The slots (Z are inclined to the longitudinal edges of the plates for a part of their length. These Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Serial No. 593,999.
slots terminate with short lengths d (Z which are parallel to the longitudinal edges of the plate. The prongs are provided with vertical serrations h In use the file is in its normal or closed position, one edge in of the sliding plate f being tucked under the folded over part 7) of the fixed plate (a and the loose leaves or papers rest on the folded over part of the fixed plate and are kept away from the sliding plate f and prevented from being caught or cut thereby.
In the closed position the pins 9 rest in that part of the slots d which are parallel to the longitudinal edges of the plate, and the vertical serrations on the prongs of one plate engage with the vertical serrations on the prongs of the other plate whereby the two plates are locked together, the lock being rendered more elficient by one plate lying in the groove formed by the turned over edge of the other plate. In the'open position the mating prongs on one plate are out of ali-nement with the mating prongs of the other plate.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A loose leaf file or binder comprising the combination of a plate bent over to form a groove, a plurality of mating prongs fixed to said plate, a second plate, a plurality of mating prongs fixed to the second plate, slots in one of the plates, studs in the other plate adapted to travel in said slots, said slots being inclined to the longitudinal edges of the plate for a part of their length, and parallel therewith for a part of their length, and vertical serrations on the mating prongs.
2. A loose-leaf file or binder comprising a sheet metal plate bent over upon itself to form an overhanging flange, and having a plurality of mating prongs fixed thereto, a second plate adapted to project under said overhanging flange having a plurality of mating prongs afiixed thereto adapted to cooperate with the mating prongs on the other plate, and a sliding connection between said plates whereby said prongs may be brought into and out of cooperative resigned my name in the presence of two sub latlon, szud connectlon comprlsmg slots 1n scrlblng wltnesses. one of sa1d plates and studs projectlng 1nto said slots on the other of said plates, said JOHN WALKER slots having portions parallel with the longi Witnesses: v tudinal edges of the plates. JOHN VAUGHAN,
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto ROBERT MILTON SPEARPOINT.
