COL-UM)! PIJNOGRAPH 120-, WASHINGTON, D. C-
WILLIAM H. ALLE 0F IM ERIAL, CALIFORNIA- TRUSS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ALLEN, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Imperial, county of Imperial, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trusses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable all who are skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in trusses to be used for hernia on one or both sides, and has for its purposes to provide a truss with special pads that conform to different positions and movements of the body, thus preventing chafing, and that the said pad or pads may be adjusted to clifferent positions so as to fit each individual case. I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my truss showing two pads in position thereon and their adjusted positions thereon by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one of the pads, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof through AB in Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
This truss is composed of a back pad 1, a spring wire 2, smaller pads 3 and 4t, and straps 5 and 6.
The back pad 1 is composed of leather, faced on its inner surface with felt or other soft material and on the outside is placed spring wire 2 over which is placed another leather and attached to the inner piece, the ends of the spring wire 2 extending down ward and forward either between the legs of the wearer or around the outside as best suits the particular conditions of the wearer, and on the ends are mounted the small pads 3 and 4. These spring wires are made of spring material adapted to be bent in dif ferent shapes as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the pad may be placed in exact-1y the right position by simply bending the extending ends of the wires to the desired extent. Attached to the back pad are also straps 4t and 5 which extend around the body and are attached to the smaller pads; said straps 4t and 5 being provided with holes adapted to fasten over a set screw 2 on the central portion of the small pad, thus helping to hold said pad in its adjusted posi- Speoification of Letters Patent.

tion. The body portions 3 of the small pads are composed of wood which may be padded if desired, and are shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Said body portion 3 is provided in its outer surface lengthwise with a groove adapted to allow spring wire 2 to set into said body portion flush with the outside surface which is flat. In the central portion of said body portion is provided a larger recess 3* adapted to allow free movement of a collar 2 which fits loosely over spring wire 2, and in said recess. Into this collar 2 is screwed set screw 2*, adapted to fasten the collar stationary to spring wire 2, and the head being a short distance from plate 3 allowing for the straps 4t and 5. Over the top surface of the pad is placed a plate 3 fastened by screw 3' and provided with a square hole 3 in the central portion adapted to loosely fit said collar 2 lengthwise and to allow a slight movement of the screw in radial directions to the wire. This truss can also be made with just one small pad if desired by removing one of the extended ends of the spring wire and pad and one of the straps, in which case the other strap 4 or 5 extends from the back pad on the opposite side from the extended end of spring wire 2, and fastening over screw 2 on said pad.
It can readily be seen that with this construction the pad 3 together with the plate 3 can move slightly in relation to the spring 2 and the collar 2 and set screw 2 but that after the slight movement it strikes against the edges of the square hole 3*. This slight movement allows the pad to adjust itselfto different positions of the body, thus preventing chafing, and that the general position of the pad may be easily adjusted by slight- .bends in the spring wire 2, in connection with the holes in the straps 4 and 5.
' Having thus described my invention what .I claim as new and desire to secure by Letset-screws in said collars, plates over said.
wire, means in said plates and collars for allowing slight lineal and revoluble movement of said pads, all substantially as set forth.
2. In a truss, the combination of a back pad, front pads, a spring wire extending lengthwise and rigidly attached to said back pad, the ends extending downward between the limbs of the wearer, then upward and adjustably connected to said front pads, means in connection with said front pads, and wire for allowing slight lineal and revoluble movement of said pads on said wire and straps attached to said back pad adapted Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
to extend forward and provided with a plurality of holes to engage with set screws in the front pads for adjustment of said front 15 WILLIAM H. ALLEN.
