- DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING THE HA NDS 0F PIANOFORTEPLAYERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 7, 1914:.
Application filed October 28, 1913. Serial No. 797,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO SGATO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting the Hands of Pianoforte-Players, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices designed to insure the correct position of the hands in playing the pianoforte.
The device comprises a rigid bar adapted to be strapped or otherwise secured to the wrist of the player, said bar having a shape whereby the wrist is arched to place the hand in correct playing position.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing its position on the players hand.
As shown in the drawing, the device comprises a rigid bar 5 of wood or other suitable material having a facing 6 of felt or other soft material on the top and bottom. Intermediate its ends, the bar carries a strap 7 having a buckle or other suitable fastener 8. The strap is adapted to be passed around the players wrist and secured by the buckle, whereby the bar is fastened in place. The bar has a transverse top groove 9 in which latter, under the top facing 6, the strap is located.
The bar 5 is adapted to be mounted on the back of the players hand, and its length is such that it extends forward from the wrist joint for a short distance along the back of the hand and also rearward along not extend as far as the first-joint of the I fingers, thus leaving the same perfectly free.
The device herein described is designed to be used by students of the pianoforte and by its use the correct position of the hand is insured, and after this has been mastered, the device may be discarded.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a narrow elongated rigid bar having a wrist-engaging portion which is arched, and from which wrist portion the bar has a downward curve engaging the back of the hand, said hand engaging part terminating short of the first joint of the fingers, and attaching means for the bar.
2. A device of the character described comprising a narrow elongated rigid bar having forearm, wrist and hand-engaging parts, the forearm-engaging part having an upward curve to the wrist-engaging part, and the hand-engaging part curving downward from the wrist-engaging part, and attaching means for the bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTONIO SCATO. Witnesses:
F. W. SEYBOLT, ALEXANDER NEUMANN.
