Description

色序矩陣液晶顯示器
本發明係關於一種色序型主動式矩陣液晶顯示器。
色序型顯示器的一項優點為不需濾色片而造出直視螢幕所用彩色顯示系統之可能性,換句話說不需附加於每一影像點或像素的任何顏色資訊。每一像素即為無色且使用一光盒子以三原色依序地照射螢幕。本發明特別可應用於直視螢幕市場;從手機螢幕到電視機所用的大尺寸螢幕。
本發明特別可用於顯示器,該顯示器的像素係經類比地控制者。稱為灰階,對應於所接收的影像信號,之單位亮度階係由在像素列上施加相應的類比電壓階來達成,係由一灰標度所界定。為了顯示所給灰階,像素的活性要素係對一行的週期活化來傳輸相應的類比電壓階至像素電容上。液晶隨後依所施加的類比值來定向至一方向。通過此液晶的輸入光偏移隨後由一極化器來修改並分析。
顯示效能特別取決於亮度,而亮度取決於像素的照明時間。此等照明時間取決於將類比電壓階傳輸至矩陣列中每一像素上的定址時間(addressing time),及取決於先前的類比電壓階和現行的類比電壓階之液晶穩定化時間。
此等限制在以色序模式定址的顯示器之情況中更為加強。每一框包括數個彩色子框,每一原色有一個子框。因此,每個框通常有三種顏色的子框。如此,在每一框期中,矩陣中的所有像素必須定址至少三次,以顯示對應於每一原色的視訊資訊。
在某些色序類型的液晶顯示器中,常會增加彩色顯示頻率以解決熟知的顏色分離問題,特別是因液晶穩定化時間所導致者。因此例如,在每一視訊框中每種原色具有二個上色子框。顯示器定址時間的上限值係由視訊框的持續時間所固定。將視訊頻率變為兩倍會使視訊框的持續時間減半,此會造成問題。特別者,面板中最後一數列的像素可能沒有足夠的時間達到彼等的新的視訊設定值。若先前的定址期係用於紅色的子框,則可能在面板底部有對應於先前紅色子框的某些數據出現於新的子框中,例如綠色子框。
於此等不同的顯示器中,液晶的回應時間係一非常嚴格的約束。此等回應時間取決於先前子框期間記憶的類比電壓階和在新的子框期間要充電的類比電壓階。於此情況中,列係經非常快速地掃描。例如,每色子框有3毫秒來掃描所有的列。液晶開關時間係在1毫秒級次。因此,於實作中在子框中定址的第一列要有1至2毫秒來從先前子框的視訊階段轉換到目前子框的視訊階段,而最後一列則幾乎不足1毫秒。取決於先前視訊階和現行階者,切換時間會變異且對於框中最後數列中的像素可用的時間可能不足以使此等像素來收斂向其新的目標階。
取TN(扭曲向列型(Twisted Nematic))型液晶顯示為例,液晶從一灰階至另一灰階的切換時間係遠大於從黑階變成白階,或者從白階變成灰階的切換時間。黑階係在像素與相對電極之間的電位差最大時之液晶模式。白階係在像素與相對電極之間的電位差最小時之液晶模式。亮灰度對應於類似獲得白色所施加的值之施加電位差,而暗灰度對應於類似獲得黑色所施加的值之電位差。從白階變成亮灰階的切換時間可能比從黑階變成此相同亮灰階的切換時間較長一倍半。從亮灰階變成黑階的切換時間係非常短者。於一TN型液晶的例子中,測得下列切換時間:從白變成黑為0.2毫秒;從黑變成白為1毫秒;在二灰階間測量到的最壞情況為3.25毫秒。
在本發明中,試圖要改善液晶顯示器的效能,特別是使得每一視訊框中對每種原色可使用數個色子框,以減少由於光盒打開和關閉頻繁所導致的頻閃效應(stroboscopic effect),同時維持良好的影像品質。
本發明所建基的一項技術解決之道為製造具有一類比電壓的灰階,該電壓會依要顯示的像素及/或顏色所關連的列而變異。
因此,本發明係關於一種視訊系統,其包括一液晶色序顯示器,其具有一含有以列和行排列的像素之面板;且包括控制面板內每一像素上的單位亮度階,稱為灰階,的工具,每一灰階係對應於在輸入端接收到的視訊資訊;該視訊系統的特徵在於在一像素上受控制的灰階係以一類比電壓所達成,該類比電壓會依與像素及要顯示的顏色相關聯的列而單調地變異。
圖1顯示具有主動矩陣面板1的LCD顯示器方塊圖。其包括一第一基板支撐電晶體和像素電極;一第二基板,其可或可不包括濾色片;和一相對電極CE,其係面板內的所有像素共用者,且其可或可不放置於濾色片上。此二基板係彼此以一間隔近似地平行著,二基板間的空間內於相對電極與主動矩陣間具有液晶。該面板係由m列r1 至rm 組成,每一列包括n個顯示元件或像素2,和n行c1 至cn ,每一行具有m個像素2。每一像素具有相關聯的主動元件,在此實施例中為電晶體3。通常,任一列中電晶體的閘電極係共同連接到列導體r1 ...rm 且在任一行中的電晶體之源極或汲極傳導電極係共同連接到行導體c1 ...cn ,其他電極係連接到相關像素2的像素電極Ep。
此等顯示器的定址期(addressing phase)通常包括一寫入步驟,其中依序地選出列,且將每一所選列的活性元件活化來接收並傳輸類比電壓階到相關的像素電容上,以相應於所需切換時間的穩定化時間以使得所有的像素被切換;及一照明步驟,期間係照明面板,光線由顯示器調制而收取相應的影像。於色序模式中,對每一原色在相同的視訊框內完成此步驟至少一次。
寫入步驟包括在列定址時間t1 (或列時間(row time)中,施加一閘電壓至面板1中每一列的相關列導體上。其效用為將此列的所有電晶體3都轉為ON(導電)狀態,並將施加在行上對應於要顯示的視訊資訊之電壓切換在像素電極Ep上。此定址係經由以稱為列驅動器D-X的控制電路來選擇列,和以行驅動器D-Y的控制電路來控制像素上的灰階,予以控制。此等驅動器可整合到顯示器內或彼等可為外接者。每一定址期間內因而對每一列定址一列時間,使得顯示器面板中的所有列都被掃描過。定址通常係以一列接一列地次序完成。也可能有其他的列定址模式。特別者,可將面板中的列分配為不同的群組使得寫入中可同時對數列定址。在色序顯示器的例子中,一視訊框中每個色子框有一定址期。
在一所選列中像素上的灰階係經由施加一組類比電壓階V1 至Vn 所控制,每一行c1 至cn 各有一類比電壓階,相應於於輸入端(DataIN)施加的視訊資訊,並相對於對顯示器所定灰階予以界定。於圖2中顯示的實施例中,此組類比電壓階V1 至Vn 係由一數位類比轉換器10所輸出。根據一已知範例結構,此等轉換器係R-DAC型,換言之其係使用一電壓參考電路11來輸出k類比參考電壓階Vref1 至Vrefk ,且使用串接的電阻帶設定電阻分配器,在每一參考階Vref1 至Vrefk 之間設一階段,來輸出類比電壓階V1 至Vn 。轉換器10因此在輸入端接收的每一數位碼與類比電壓階V1 至Vn 之間設立一雙射(bijection)。面板內灰階的數目係等於(k-1).1或(k-1).1/2取決於所選定址模式。對於相應於顯示器上一列的進入流DataIN中的每一系列視訊資料,轉換器10因而可透過一擴大器裝置12輸出一組n類比電壓階V1 至Vn ,且此等階係施加到行c1 至cn 。通常,要施加到行的電壓V1 ,...Vn 所具極性係在每一定址期過程中被倒相;因此有一正框和負框(或子框)的交錯。此可導致在液晶上的零平均電壓且防止面板的標記。
於本發明中且如圖3中所示者,顯示器包括一電路11,其能產生一組類比參考電壓Vref1 ,Vrefk 界定針對所選電流列及/或要顯示的顏色給定之灰階標度。如此所選的灰階標度,對於在所選電流列中的像素所接收的每一視訊資訊,透過比等的相關聯行c1 ,...cN 輸出一相應的類比電壓V1 ,...Vn 施加到此等像素上。因此,產生電路11可因此產生複數組的類比參考電壓值Vref1 ,...Vrefk ,每一組編碼相對於面板中的列位置或所關聯的顏色所決定之一不同灰階標度。如此,灰標度隨時都以相對於此等列位置及顏色參數最優化形式使用。PI係一相應於寫入中選擇的列位置之選擇參數,且Pc係一相應於電流顯示顏色之選擇參數。
於圖3所示一範例具體實例中,根據本發明的產生電路11包括一裝置5用於記憶數位值組,每一組編碼一相對於所選電流列位置及/或要顯示的顏色予以最優化之灰標度。例如,該裝置5可為一RAM類型記憶體。其係以一k數位電路6聯結至類比轉換器以輸出類比參考電壓數值Vref1 ,...Vrefk ,彼等值係對應於在電路5中所選的且要施加到數位至類比轉換電路6的輸入端之數位值組。電路10和11係經同步化使得在參數Pc及/或PI上的每一狀況變化有一組參考電壓值Vref1 ,...Vrefk ,相應於此等新的狀況。

所需灰階的數目係特別地決定於面板類型和其特性,寫入中同時定址的列數目,和所需的顯示器品質。
每次參數改變時,即充入一新的相應類比參考電壓階組Vref1 ,...Vrefk 。此組係用於電流寫入步驟和用於隨後的寫入步驟,直到參數PI改變為止。其接著在裝置5中指出一新的數位值組,且獲得一新的相應參考類比電壓階組Vref1 ,...Vrefk 。在此等操作中,施加到行上的類比電壓階V1 至Vn 係針對像素的位置而調制。
圖4和5示出在定址期中針對面板中像素的位置所得亮度曲線,第一圖係根據現有技藝的顯示器,具有一為面板界定的單一灰標度;第二圖為根據本發明之顯示器,使用針對列中像素的位置之複數灰標度。圖4顯示介於第一列r1 和第一行c1 中的第一像素p(r1 ,c1 ),與在最後一列rm 和最後一行cn 中的最後一個像素p(rm ,cn )之間的大差異。圖5中,該二像素的曲線下面積變得可相比。
於本發明第二具體實例中,可應用的灰標度取決於要顯示的顏色。其可用於色序顯示器。所選參數Pc的值係由相應於電流定址期的色子框所具顏色來界定。此等顏色資訊典型地可從光盒的控制信號來獲得。施加的參考類比電壓值組Vref1 至Vrefk 接著經於每一顏色改變過程中,換言之在每次新的定址期過程中修改。此係相同於針對子框的顏色調制施加到行上的類比電壓階V1 至Vn 。換言之,對每一種顏色都提供一灰階標度。灰階標度通常係對每一面板校準以整合一所謂的γ補償(或S曲線)以改善顯示器的顯示效能。根據本發明,灰標度可因此整合對相應的顏色最佳化之γ補償。於實作中,係於每一新定址期的開始時,相對於對應定址期的顏色修改類比參考電壓值Vref1 至Vrefk
參考圖3,使用對應於電流定址期的照明顏色之參數Pc的值來指出記憶體5中決定的數值組,其接著施加到轉換電路6的輸入端,因而輸出對應的參考類比電壓組Vref1 至Vrefk 。於實作中,記憶化裝置5記憶三組數位值,每一組界定一特定的灰標度,每種原色一組。每一組係針對所關聯的原色,所考慮的顯示器特定地決定,以從每一顏色的最優γ校正曲線獲益。
顯然地,決定可用的灰標度所用之不同參數可根據顏色和列於以組合。然後針對兩種指標Pc和PI的組合選擇出裝置中記憶化的一組。
剛說明過的本發明可應用於需要改善亮度或於固定亮度下的能量消耗之任何顯示器。其同等地可應用於使用定址模式的顯示器,其中面板的m列係一列接一列第個別選擇,或其中數列可同時選擇。此係可行者,特別是於具有主動矩陣類型的色序顯示器之矩陣顯示器中,其中將諸列分配成p組且其中每一像素行包括p行導体用於平行p列中的像素之寫入選擇,每一組一列。例如,每一組可包括面板的m/p連續列,使得顯示器經安排成p個m/p列之帶。同時選出的任一列可使用相同的灰標度,或者可對應於同時選出的此等列的每一列製造出不同的灰標度。此不會造成任何特別的製造問題,因為當同時選出p列時,會有平行的p行驅動器使得可以用一不同的參考類比電壓組施加於每一p行驅動器。

Claims (4)

  1. 一種包括色序液晶顯示器的視訊系統,其包括一含有以列和行排列的像素(2)之面板(1),包括控制面板內每一像素上的單位亮度階(稱為灰階(grey levels))的工具,每一灰階對應於一在輸入端接收的視訊資訊(DataIN),該視訊系統的特徵在於其包括一電路(11)用於產生一組類比參考電壓,該參考類比電壓相對於一所選電流列及/或要顯示的顏色界定一給定的灰階標度,該經如此選出的標度透過彼等相關的行針對在所選電流列中的像素所接收的每一視訊資訊而輸出一相應的類比電壓(V1 ,...Vn )於該等像素上。
  2. 根據申請專利範圍第1項之視訊系統,其中其亦包括一裝置(5)用於記憶數位值組,每一組編碼一既定的灰階標度;和一數位至類比轉換器的電路(6),該轉換器電路(6)在輸入端接收在複數所記憶的數位值組中的一組,此係相對於所選電流列或要顯示的顏色而選出且輸出一相應的參考類比電壓值組(Vref1 ,Vrefk )。
  3. 根據申請專利範圍第1或2項之視訊系統,其中該產生電路(11)對面板中的每一列輸出一不同的參考類比電壓值組(Vref1 ,...Vrefk )。
  4. 根據申請專利範圍第1或2項的視訊系統,其中該產生電路(11)對面板中具有既定位置的複數列輸出一特定的參考類比電壓數值組(Vref1 ,...Vrefk )。
