Abstract

Provided is water-absorbing acrylic fiber which is excellent in heat resistance, shape-retentiveness and crimp-stability and can be treated with the same after-treatment used for conventional acrylic fiber. Water-absorbing acrylic fiber can be obtained by dissolving in thiocyanate solution acrylonitrile polymer comprising at least 85 wt% of acrylonitrile unit and cellulose thus making a blend having 80-95 wt% of acrylonitrile polymer and 20-5 wt% of cellulose and then wet spinning. The said acrylic fiber contains micro-voids which will not vanish by heat-treatment such as drying, crimp setting and so on. The thus obtained water-absorbing acrylic fiber is excellent in heat-resistance, shape-retentiveness and crimp-stability and is not worse than the conventional acrylic fiber when is in use.
