Abstract

1502424 Dyeing acrylic fibres COURTAULDS Ltd 26 June 1975 [27 March 1974] 13489/74 Headings D1B and DIK Acrylic fibres (defined as fibres of a homopolymer of acrylonitrile or a copolymer comprising at least 80 per cent by weight of acrylonitrile units) are given improved receptivity to basic and disperse dyes by treating in the gel state with tetrahydrothiophen-1, 1- dioxide or a compound having at least one partially or completely hydrogenated thiophen- 1, 1-dioxide group, or N N'-biscyanoethyl formamide or propylene carbonate, preferably to give an uptake of 3 to 10 per cent by weight. Aqueous baths of the compounds may be employed and may contain a soft finish for the fibres which are preferably stretched and washed before impregnation. The fibres may be collected as continuous filament yarn or tow or processed to staple fibre yarn. Prior to collection or cutting the fibres may be crimped e.g. in a stuffing-box crimper. Staple fibres may be blended with other fibres either by fibre-blending operation or a sliverblending operation.
