Abstract

A method of treating dyed cellulosic fabric in unsewn form or in the form of a garment or other article composed of sewn fabric to produce a stonewashed effect by selectively removing dye from the fabric while reducing the redeposition of dye on the fabric, the process comprising contacting the fabric with a water-based composition having a pH of 4-6 and comprising (a) at least one cellulase enzyme having optimum cellulose degrading activity in a medium having a pH of 4-6, and (b) as a dye redeposition-inhibiting additive, natural and synthetic inorganic silicates selected from the group consisting of kaolin clays, fullers earth, zeolites, bentonites, smectite clays and hydrated amorphous silicon dioxide; polyalkylene oxide polymers selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxides and polyethylene glycols; acrylic polymers selected from the group consisting of homopolymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and copolymers of the acids with esters of the acids, polyalkenyl polyether or styrene; natural, synthetic and synthetically modified natural polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of natural and synthetic gums and thickeners and hydroxylated cellulose materials; gelatin; or casein, in the following percentages by weight of the total composition: Natural/synthetic inorganic silicates: 0.025-5.0% Polyalkyleneoxide polymers: 0.025-2.5% Polysaccharide polymers: 0.005-5.0% Acrylic homopolymers and copolymers: 0.005-8.0%.
