Abstract
An apparatus for forming fresh ice particles of a desired sizing and at a desired mass flow rate suitable for use in ice blasting equipment is provided. The apparatus comprises: i)counter-rotating first and second rollers for fracturing ice and having a nip to receive and direct ice flakes or sheets between said rollers at said desired mass flow rate, ii)each of said counter-rotating ice fracturing cylindrical rollers having a uniform array of parallel row of a plurality of spikes extending parallell to a longitudinal axis for each roller, said plurality of spikes in each row being uniformly and equally spaced apart, circumferentially of each of said cylindrical rollers, iii)said rollers in counter-rotating position having their respective longitudinal axis spaced apart a distance to mesh opposing spikes on said rollers, iv)means for counter-rotating said meshed rollers at a circumferential velocity which fractures ice flakes or sheets introduced to said nip at said desired mass flow rate, v)means for fixing relative meshed synchronized rotational position of said rollers to locate a row of said rows of spikes of said first roller between an adjacent two rows of said rows of spikes of said second roller, vi)said apikes of said row of said first roller being offset laterally in said longitudinal axis direction relative to said spikes of said row of said second roller to postiion and project a spike of said first roller spatially between four opposing adjacent spikes of two adjacent rows of spikes of said second roller,vii)means for locating and fixing depth of spike projection of said spikes of said first roller into a recess between spikes of said second roller, said desired sizing of fresh ice particles being determined by distance between spike projection and recess where particle size is proportional to the depth distance.
