Abstract

1398745 Corona charging/discharging apparatus HOECHST AG 15 Sept 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 42956/72 Heading H1N Apparatus for influencing the electrostatic charge on web or sheet material comprises at least two parallel rows of pointed electrode members 4, the members in each row being coplanar such that the points 5 form two parallel lines, the two rows being electronically insulated from each other, and a plurality of substantially parallel insulating walls 7 extending at an acute angle to the rows of printed members such that each member in one row is connected by a channel running between two adjacent insulating walls to a corresponding member in the opposite row. The members 4 which may be of steel, a spherical steel or other metal alloy, or a noble metal, are embedded in a block 1 of insulating material, e.g. ceramics or plastics with only the points 5 protruding from the block. The walls 7 preferably extend at an angle of less than 45 degrees to the rows of members 4. A counterelectrode 9 in the form of a roller maintained at the same potential as one of the rows of members 4 may be provided, particularly when charging electrophotographic materials. Three or more rows of members 4 may be provided and the points 5 are preferably staggered so that a point in one row lies on the perpendicular bisecting the distance between the opposite pair of adjacent members in the adjacent row, material 6 moving in the direction of the arrow C is uniformly charged or discharged by the apparatus even in the event of failure of a pair of associated needles.
