Спуск на воду спасательных шлюпок с судов большого водоизмещени  вручную продолжителен и, кроме того, при штормовой погоде редко удаетс  спустить открытые шлюпки благополучно, т. к. обычно их заливает водою и разбивает ветром, а увеличиватьзначительно тоннаж невозможно, если приходитс  рассчитывать на спуск их вручную и держать их высоко на палубе.
