Description

A method is proposed for isolating l- and m-toluenesulfonic acids from an equilibrium mixture of o-m-p-isomers of toluene – sulfonic acid (m-isomer 54%, p-isomer 4%, o-isomer 6%). obtained by sulphonating toluene at 130-200 °. The essence of the method is as follows: a dry hydrogen chloride gas is passed through an aqueous solution of isomeric toluenesulfonic acids (after removal of excess sulfuric acid and partial evaporation in a known manner) at a temperature of from -5 to -20 ° C. The p-isomer that crystallizes out is filtered off, and the filtrate, consisting of a solution of the m-isomer with a small admixture of the o-isomer, is heated at a temperature of 100 ° until complete removal of hydrogen chloride. The p-toluenesulfonic acid obtained in this way is pure and does not contain impurities of other isomers, and the toluene sulfonic acid extracted from the filtrate contains about 94% of the m-isomer and 6% of the o- and p-isomers.

Subject invention

100.A method for separating p- and m-toluenesulfonic acids, characterized in that the p-isomer is crystallized from the mixture by passing hydrogen chloride gas through it at a temperature of from -5 to -20 ° C, and the m-isomer is obtained after removing hydrogen chloride by heating at 100.
