Abstract

Pulp is (a) cooked (b) treated wit EDTA, DTPA and/or acidified to remove heavy metals (c) delignified in at least 2 oxygen stages with no wash between them (d) bleached with O2, O3, ClO2 and/or H2O2 to give a bleached pulp prod. with at least ISO 80 brightness. Pulp bleaching with Cl2 free cpds. Cl2 and O3 use can be avoided. Brightness of prod. can be increased to ISO 90 if needed by using an O3 stage in place of H2O2. Pollution is lowered.
