Abstract
During the combustion of hydrocarbons and other fossil fuels there is often abundant emission of carbon particles (particulates), due to shortage of air in the mixture burnt or even to poor mixing. According to the invention, particulates are removed from exhaust gases by means of an electrostatic separation system which can advantageously be formed as part of the exhaust or flue gas system. The particulates collected, can be burnt in situ by introducing air, heating 5 the deposit and igniting the mixture with a spark plug 10. Alternatively (Fig 2) a demountable exhaust pipe may be used and removed for cleaning. <IMAGE>
