Abstract

Internally, the pipe joint is supported by a removable body of frozen water, or frozen and condensed carbon dioxide gas. This body has an external dia. corresp. to the inner dia. of the pipe ends. Prior to explosion welding, the pipe ends are collared outwards to a larger dia. in order to compensate for dia. redn. at the joint location due to the frozen body being pressed together when the explosive charge is detonated. An alternative method involves the muff having a smaller dia. than the pipe ends, and whereby the frozen body is placed inside the muff. The pipe ends are then pushed over the muff. The explosive charge is then placed over the pipe ends, and on detonation, the pipe ends are impelled against the muff supported by the frozen body.
