Abstract
A treatment vessel 2 contains a molten metal alloy, such as cast iron 7, and a plurality of separate treatment processes can take place therein. Thus, the single treatment vessel 2 incorporates and/or is provided with treatment devices, such as an externally or internally charged treatment chamber 5 for containing a charge of Mg alloy, and plugs 12 for introducing a gas into the melt. In the illustrated vessel, desulphurisation takes place by the introduction of calcium carbide via a lance 9 and is aided by the introduction of an agitating gas e.g. argon via the porous plugs 12. After withdrawal of the lance, the vessel is rotated so that the molten metal alloy reacts with the charge in chamber 5. A vibrating apparatus (10, Figure 1) may be used instead of agitating gas introduced via porous plugs 12. <IMAGE>
