Abstract
1471491 Induction heated refining vessels BRITISH STEEL CORP 20 March 1975 [22 March 1974] 12873/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Molten metal (e.g. stainless steel) is refined by injecting a reactive gas and an inert gas into the melt through tuyeres in the vessel wall, in which heat is supplied to the melt by an induction heater. The gases are injected into the melt 5 through concentric tuyeres 4, and are preferably O 2 and Ar, although H 2 O and N 2 may also be used. The method may be used in the argon-oxygen decarburization of stainless steel, and in a variation the stainless steel may be initially blown with O 2 /H 2 O and finally with H 2 O/Ar, followed by an Ar purge to eliminate H 2 pick-up. The production of Ni-free ferritic stainless steel having low C and N (not more than 0À02%) is referred to.
