An apparatus for measuring or monitoring the fullness of a liquid container has an optical probe element (2) disposed at the lower end of a much longer flexible rod (1). The probe element comprises a body of light-conducting material arranged to reflect incident light to a greater or lesser degree dependent upon the wetting of the surface of the body by the liquid. <IMAGE>
