Abstract
A tuyere for injection of powder material in a stream of a carrier gas into liquid metal consists of a feed tube with a device at the end to separate a part of the carrier gas from the main flow. The end piece has in its wall at least one hole through which gas escapes so that the powder concn. at the outflow nozzle is increased. This results in more effective utilisation of the powder for the purposes of carbon enrichment, deoxn. or desulphurisation. The mixture, e.g. of a desulphurising powder with compressed air, passes along the tuyere (1) to the end part where two rows of holes (2) allow the air to escape along passages (3) to an annulus (6) and to atmosphere above the metal bath level. The jet which actually enters the metal therefore has a higher powder concn.
