Abstract
A method of producing echo pulse shapes which can be arbitrarily selected modifies the known technique in which an impulse generated by a transducer of a test instrument is reflected to the transducer by replacing the reflected signal with a preselected signal e.g. 10. This latter signal is derived either by frequency-domain processing of the reflected signal Y(f) to take into account the combined response H(f) of the transducer and wave propagation path, or by using a transmission signal 11 calculated to give the desired echo pulse 10 taking into account the response H(f). <IMAGE>
