Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent an influence due to fluctuation or convection of the atmosphere and to reduce attenuation of a supersonic wave by a method wherein a continuous column of flowing fluid is used as a propagation medium for the supersonic wave. CONSTITUTION:A pulse from a pulse generating circuit 13a is applied to a transmitting/receiving device 2 and a gate circuit 14. The transmitting/receiving device 2 sends an ultrasonic wave pulse into a flowing water column 6. The wave pulse is reflected by the surface of a substance 1 to be measured, and then returned back to the transmitting/receiving device 2. Output from the device 2 is amplified by a receiving amplifier 15 and thereafter applied to the gate circuit 14. Upon this, clock pulses sent from a clock pulse circuit 13b to a counting circuit 16 are interrupted. A distance to the measured substance 1 is obtained based on the counted value of the counting circuit 16.
