Abstract

In a centrifugal pump having an inlet bend 1, with guide ribs 3 extending from substantially upstream of the impeller 2 to just upstream of the impeller, the guide ribs 3 are cut back, immediately upstream of the impeller, in the region of the peripheral wall 7 of the inlet bend, so that the vanes 3 extend as far as the impeller only at 6 in the region of the hub 4 of the impeller. An entry cone 5 may be disposed in the inlet bend opposite the hub 4. The cutting back of the ribs 3 allows the part-load vortex occurring during part-load operation of the pump to emerge unobstructedly from the impeller to the upstream area, and thereby cavitation damage to the impeller and guide ribs is reduced as compared with known pumps. <IMAGE>
