Abstract
The invention relates to a process for making crude iron from a material containing iron sulphide, in which process the iron-containing sulphide-type material is introduced into the hearth of a furnace and melted there with a silica-containing material and oxygen. This gives an iron silicate melt, while the sulphur bound in the sulphide form is burned off. The resulting melt contains about 70-90 wt-% of iron, calculated as ferrous oxide. A reducing agent is then added to the melt in such a way that the iron content calculated as ferrous oxide is reduced to about 60 wt-% or less in the presence of lime and/or other fluxes, and the crude iron formed is separated off. The iron content of the iron silicate melt is then raised by adding more material containing iron sulphide, together with oxygen for melting, as well as a reducing agent for further reduction. <IMAGE>
