Abstract

A method of compressing the dynamic range of received back- scattered signals, for example lidar signals, and apparatus for carrying out the method, wherein the effective receiving area of a detector is selected in dependence upon the minimum range R from which all back-scattered signals are required to be detected in accordance with the following formula: dk = D . f/R where dk is the effective receiving area of the detector D is the diameter of the transmitted beam at the distance R and f is the focal length of the receiving system. Close range echoes thereby produce an image greater than detector surface whereby energy impinging thereon is reduced. <IMAGE>
