Abstract
1304831 Photo-electric apparatus ELTRO GmbH 25 May 1962 [25 May 1961] 20300/62 Heading G1A [Also in Division H4] The position of a point target relative to a reference direction is determined by a device which modulates the acoustic or electro-magnetic waves emitted by the target; the depth and phase of the modulation is determined by the target angular position with respect to a line of sight. As shown, the target radiation is received at the focusing device 3 and the resultant beam is directed into the deflecting device 9 so as to displace it laterally with respect to the aiming axis 5. From device 9, the beam passes to the modulator disc 10 which is formed with alternate, radial, opaque and transparent segments. The disc remains fixed while the deflector 9 rotates at a fixed angular velocity round axis 5 and produces due to its eccentricity of orbit a frequency modulated signal. A photo-electric cell may receive the modulated beam transmitted by disc 10, and the output after comparison with a reference frequency, is rectified and demodulated to produce from the amplitude and phase of the F.M. two D.C. voltages which represent the Cartesion Co-ordinates of the target. The system is said to be adaptable to radar, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, or acoustic waves.
