Abstract

1476933 Optical position finding EMI Ltd 30 May 1974 [19 June 1973] 29084/73 Heading H4D A tracking and/or guidance system of the static split detector type, sensitive to energy emitted by, or reflected from a vehicle, e.g. a missile, comprises a telescope 1 which focuses energy, e.g. infra-red, from a beacon mounted on a missile, on to a fibre optic or ground glass screen 2 and has a variable optical system. The disposition of the diffused energy on the screen 2, being indicative of the target position is directed by complex lens system 3 on to a static split detector screen 4 of known type. In order to reduce the physical dimensions of detector 4, for tracking a missile close to the system where the deviation angle may be high, lens 3 is arranged to be physically moved along a track 7 by an electric motor 6 so that it is close to detector 4 when the missile is close to the system. As the missile increases its distance from the system and its deviation subtends a progressively smaller angle from the system axis, lens 3 is moved away from detector 4 until at a predetermined distance it is stopped, whereupon a sharp image is focused on the detector in a known manner. The rate of the lens movement is controlled by motor 6 and programmed to correspond to the missile velocity.
