Abstract

1335539 Optical missile tracking HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 10 Dec 1970 [13 March 1970] 58793/70 Heading H4D [Also in Division G2] A missile 10 is tracked and guided to its target 12 by an optical device receiving light (e.g. infra-red) from the missile and projecting it by a rotatable mirror 28 to form an annular track and determining the phase difference between impulses from crossed detectors 30, 32 and the angular position of the mirror and computing the error 40 and feeding it to the missile control circuit 44. For short ranges a wider angle of scan is used, i.e. the mirror 28 is more tilted to cause the light to describe a larger circle and as the range increases the angle of scan is automatically or manually narrowed by decreasing the tilt, a second pair of detectors 30, 32, being substituted for 30, 32. An observer operating the device via a telescope 16 which may be linked by servo to device 18.
