Abstract
750,628. Photo electric radar trainer. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1954 [Oct. 1, 1953], No. 26970/53. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] A radar trainer which includes means for providing on a viewing screen synthetic representations of echoes received from features on the earth's surface comprises a chart 3 on which radar features of the terrain are represented by areas which transmit light to different extents, a source of light, and means for detecting the energy transmitted by portions of the chart and applying corresponding signals to effect corresponding areas of the display means. The light may be generated by scanning the screen of cathode ray tube 4 with a constant intensity beam under control of scanning generator 5. Photo-electric cells 6 on the opposite side of the chart pick up the light transmitted by the chart at the point opposite the screen spot and provide electric signals which are amplified at 7 and applied to display cathode ray tube 8 which is scanned in synchronism with tube 4. A reproduction of the terrain chart is therefore obtained on display tube 8 where it may be combined with other indications. If the radar is assumed to be moving the map may be moved with respect to the tube 4 by means of suitably controlled lead screws. If the radar aerial support is assumed to be a vehicle capable of turning tube 5 may be arranged to rotate in accordance with the supposed angular movement of the vehicle. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the chart surface is made to vary in reflecting power and the spot from the scanning tube is projected on to it and the light reflected determined by photo-cells. The map for this embodiment can be made much larger than in the first embodiment. The arrangement of the present invention does not take distance variations, due to the supposed altitude of the radar above the terrain, into account. Means to do this are described in Specification 750,685.
