Abstract

376,498. Television receivers ; cathoderay tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London.-(Assignees of Zworykin, V. K. ; 22, Merrick Villa, Collingswood, New Jersey, U.S.A.) July 9, 1931, No. 19797. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1930. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii).] In a television system the picture is reproduced on a screen by a constant light-source in conjunction with a light-valve arrangement controlled by a moving beam of cathode rays. The cathode beam 27 emitted from a gun 20 is controlled in intensity by the received signals through an amplifier 22 and is deflected under the action of coils 25, 26 to scan a control screen or light-valve arrangement 15 interposed between a constant light-source 12 and the viewing screen 11. The control member 15, which is subjected to a high voltage from a source 29, comprises a series of apertures 16 and co-operating plates 17 pivoted to members 18 attached to the structure 15 by a cement 19 of low conductivity. The varying intensity of the cathode beam 27 effects corresponding and sequential variations of the discharge of the plates 17 which, in consequence, change their positions to vary the illumination by the constant source 12 of the corresponding elemental areas of the screen 11. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the screen is illuminated by reflection from the screen 15a which is constructed with a highly reflecting surface 32 whose elemental areas are shielded from the constant light-source 12 to varying extents dependent upon the positions taken up by the plates 33 under control of the cathode beam. The front surfaces of the plates 33 are arranged to be non-reflecting. According to a further modification successive elemental areas of a screen of material normally opaque to the light from the source 12 are rendered variably transparent in accordance with the intensity of the cathode beam. A substance known as " Willemite " is stated to be suitable for such a screen.
