Abstract

606,133. Copying by scanning. WHITE, D. D., and OSBORN, F. R. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23992. [Class 40 (iii)] In a local-copying system the original is scanned photo-electrically and the signal current controls an electric field between a receiving surface and a projecting device arranged to scan the receiving surface in paths corresponding to those scanned on the original and to project on to said surface colouring matter of an intensity determined by the strength of the electric field. A lamp 12 is focused on to a transparency 14 mounted on a transparent glass or plastic drum 15 which is given suitable rotary and longitudinal scanning movements. The drum may instead be of metal with suitable orifices. The light beam passed by the transparency is then focussed on to a photo-electric cell 18, and the signal-modulated output is amplified and applied between a pen device 22 and a conducting drum 24 carrying the recording sheet 23 and preferably mounted on the same shaft 16 as the transmitter drum 15. The pen device comprises a fine bore tube with an insulating fibre (e.g. of glass) passing through the tube and terminating in a bead as described in Specification 606,130. The liquid on the bead is drawn to a point and disintegrated by the electric field, the intensity of the colour deposit being determined by the output voltage of the amplifier above the minimum necessary to cause disintegration. The position of the bead in relation to the nozzle may also be determined by the amplifier output in order to provide a coarse control. Contrast, density or colour control or corrections for distortions and aberrations may be effected by injecting suitable voltages into the amplifier. Scanning may be other than helical. Three colour prints may be produced from three-colour transparencies by using three scanning beams, three photoelectric cells of appropriate colour sensitivity, three electric circuits, and three colour depositing devices. Enlargements may be obtained by altering the relative speeds of the scanning and printing drums.
