Abstract

An open water container (1) is rotatably mounted on a bow (2) which is attached to an aircraft. The horizontal axis of rotation (3) extends below the centre of gravity (12) of the filled container (1). In the unstable position, in which the container opening (10) is at the top, a locking device (13, 16, 19) secures the container (1) against rotation. Over the fire, the locking device (13, 16, 19) is released while the aircraft is stationary or flies slowly. The container (1) then automatically rotates from its unstable position through approximately 180 DEG , which causes it to empty its contents completely in an instant, making all the water drop onto the fire in a single mass. In this process, evaporation from the water surface, which is small in relation to the volume, is negligible and virtually the entire quantity of water has an extinguishing effect, even above the ground surface, so that even burning treetops are extinguished. Furthermore, the pressure of liquid on the ground is insufficient to spray out and carry along any burning pieces, and so spreading of the fire is avoided in a reliable fashion. <IMAGE>
