4 olaimsf-(ol. rs1- 235) This inventonf'remesj to cigarette holders or rests v'and extinguishers, and vit has referencemore particularly to a combination offa'nv ash tray that is equipped with an extinguishing socket and a cigarette rest thatis designed *to* auto-1 i matically dump a burning cigarettetherefr'om intoy the tray socketto extinguish' the `cigarette after it has burned down to a certain length."
It is the principal object of this invention to'provide a rc'olribination of the above char-V acter wherein the cigarette restis" mounted for movement between holdingfand dumping positions and is normally held in position forv supporting a burning cigarette thereon by a thermostatic latch element; the said element being so.'
disposed relative -to vthe position of the burning cigarette that when the cigarette'burns downto acertain point, the element under effecty ofv the heat will be caused to release the rest and .allow it1 to move by gravity to dump the burning cigarette into the tray with 'its' lighted end pro-v jectedinto the extinguishing socket.
- .used for the pivotalv It is also anfobject of this invention to pro# l vide a cigarette rest of an improved formi of construction,'designed for the support of a burning cigarette over an ash tray; and wherein they cigarette rest is pivoted andsupported'by' a latch that isassociated with andfreleased by vthe raction O'fa thermostatic strip.- 2 l Still further objects of 'the invention residek in the details of construction ofthe parts vof the present device,.in their'V combination and' mode of use aszwill hereinafter be fullyl described..
In accomplishing the' above mentioned :and other vobjects ofthe inventionglI have lprovided the improved udetailsfoi`V construction,V thegpreferredfforms of vwhichV arev illustrated 'in-the acfcompanying drawings, wherein:
- Fig. 1 is aperspective Viewr of a lcigarette rest and ash tray,combinationembodied by the pres# ent vinvention; a part of the tray being broken' away for purpose -of better illustration.
Fig .v 2 .is azverticalsectional view of a part of.

Fig. 3 is a View similar't'othat of Fig. 2, but
showing the cigarette rest after it has been tripped andl the cigarette dumped into thtray v and extinguishing socket; v 'Y Fig. Liis an outer end elevation of the cigarette rest and its supporting standard.
F1g. 5 is a top View of the cigarette rest or holder.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View Of fill@ ySliiilfl `li1 as has been illustrated best in Fig. 2.
vtherein forV 'extinguishing' the. burning portion,
Supported atone `side of the tray is a cigarette rest embodying therein certain improvements of the present invention; this rest being designed for the supportof a burningV cigarette therein The rest comprises a mounting `standard I0; best shown in Fig. 6 as comprising a flat, vertical plate Illa of`metal orothersuitable material. This standard; is adapted to be fitted at its lower end in a vertical. slotior'socket Il that is formed in the -crosspiece 4; adjacent a side wall of the tray, thus to hold itrigidly in upright position. The upper end portion of the standard extends above the edge of Athe side wall of the tray and there supports a trough-like member I2 in whichl a burning cigarette may be 'rested as shown in 1 Fig;V 2. The member I-2is of sufficient width and length to` permit a cigarette to be easily laid therein and easily picked up. It is formed along its opposite side edgesv with depending anges I3 between which the upper end portion of the standard' I0 is received', as notedqin Fig. 4.
The standard is formed at its upper endancl at opposite `edges with outwardly extending trunnionsr l5, asbest noted in Figs. 4 and 6,
which are contained in holes 1 6 that are formedV in the flanges i3 of the trough-like member, thus topivotally attach thev rest I2 to the standard `for itsA 'movement AbetweenV the supporting and dumping positions in which it is shownin Figs.
2 and 3, respectively) Whenthe rest l2 is inthe' horizontal position as shown' in Fig. 2, it isheld against outward .tilting about its supporting trunnions by reason of the bottom thereof resting against a laterally turned flange I1 formed at the upper end oi the standard. It is releasably held in this cigarette supporting positionby means of a'latch element that" is associated with af'thermostatic element 20 carried bythe rest as well as shown in Fig. 1. The element 2|) comprises a single, elongated bi-metal strip that, at one end, is rigidly attached .as seen in Fig. 7 to'one of the depending side 3 flanges I3 of the trough-like member I2 designated as the rest. The strip 20 Vis bent back and forth in a succession of loops to extend in a transverse direction across the inner end of the rest as noted in Fig. 1. The free end of this strip is turned directly outward as a latch element 22, and it is extended through a longitudinal slot 23 in the other side; flange I3 of. the; rest and. then projects into an arcuate slot 24 Vformed in a flange 25 that extends inwardly from the upper end portion of the standard I0. slot 24 is formed in the iiangeA ZiabQuttheaXialline of the trunnions I as a center. At its upper The arcuate end the outside edge of the arcuates'lotiisaiormed with an inwardly and horizontallyA extending enlargement having an upwardly facing shoulder 30 upon which the out-turned portion..22 of.. the-V thermostatic element normally seats, as seen in Fig. 2, thus to hold the rest I2 in the horizontal position in which it is shown in Fig. 2.
The thermostati'czistnrfris exposed adjacent. Yto the inner end edge of the rest I2. Therefore; ifa cigarette as placedon thef rest t2 burns down to a point adjacent this:striptheheatfof; the; burning portion acts. onfthe strip 211Y tdcausedt to be warped.- and its: free end. monedoi the supporting shoulder '3.0.24
It is to be explainedfurtherthat thaty pontion of the holder or rest I2rthatfoverhangsz the; ash
tray is sufliciently heavier-itharrfthe outerend portion so thati when. thelatcirl is@ released. `from supporting contact with theshoul'den, :the: rest swings tothe position of Figi 3 and-thesupported cigarette will be dumpe'dintcflthe: socket as showin.
Assuming the parts tol` be;- so: constructed and. assembled as described, the useandi operation of the combined holder and tray would, be: asf'ollows: The lighted cigarette 505 isi placed the: support or rest I2 asfshownin Fig. 2; with its lighted end overh'angingf the. ash' tray; When the cigarette burnsl to suchV an'. extentA that.A the; heat' from the burning portion .coines into con-- tact with thethermostatic element; the heat therefrom so affects the element that it moves from the full li'ne position ofFi'g. '7' tor thefd'ottedv line position.` By this movement; theout-turned end portion 22"` of: thef'element.- is shifted from the supportingshoulder 3'0atlthe1upperend ofr the arcuate slot124`and thepivote'd: restI I2 is per'- mitted to swing to the' position otFig: 32 When. the rest so swings, the cigarette. Willi be. dumped into the tray and' its lighted end will be projected into the extinguishing`v socket', thus extinguishing the cigarette, the socket being so located: as to receive the cigarette;
Oneadvantage ofi this dev-ice'- resides in the fact that the dumpedcig-arette will be extinguished and not become a fire hazard oro'bnoxious by' reason' of smoke and' odor;
Another advantage found.' in the present' device resides in the freed'ormof actioni off the thermostatic element. The shapev ofthe: bi-metal'ther'- mostatic element permits free air passage for' complete combustion of. a cigarette plusA rapid l 4 it to horizontal position, at which the latch element adjoining engages upon the shoulder 30.
This device may be applied in various ways to trays of different kind and it not to be restricted as to size or to the type or design of ash tray. It is adaptable for use with cigars as well as with cigarettes.
