The ashes dropped from cigarettes, cigars and the like and the heat from burning ycigarettes, cigars and the like, or the butts of the same, carelessly or indiscriminately dropped or placed, has resulted in great annoyance and damage, and the desire of a careful smoker to avoid such damage has resulted in considerable loss of time, Waste of energy and annoyance, destroying a great part of the pleasure or satisfaction of smoking.

It is the object of my invention to provide an improved device for avoiding these objections, and to provide an improved device arranged to hold the cigarette, cigar or the like 'i with itsmouth end accessible to the lips of the user and its burning end protected from con# tact with all other objects, While at the same time permitting the aroma to diffuse the at mosphere to retain the pleasure of smoking in full measure; further, to provide novel means for receiving the ashes, and for retaining the ashes which may drop from the lighted cigarette, cigar or the like; and, further, to provide novel meansfor providing pressure I upon the cigarette, cigar or the like adjacent to its mouth end whereby to extinguish the light, and confine the light and hea-t within the holder and prevent the light communicating with anexterior object whereby fire might ensue.

It is therobject of my invention, further, to provide a novel housing wherein the cigarette, cigar or the like may be contained with. its mouth end projecting outwardly so that the `user may draw on the sameduring smoking; further, to provide a novel handle for the housing whereby the housing is supported in convenient manner during ldrafts by the user upon the cigarette, cigar or the like, and between such drafts preferably in manner to permit the user the free use of his hands without the necessity of laying down the cigarette, cigar or the like and again grasping the same for smoking.

It is the obj ect of my invention, further, to provide novel means for holding the cigarette, cigar or the like; further, to provide novel means for extinguishing the light on the same further, to so relate these parts that the releasing movement of the holding means dis- Serial No. 540,574.

engages the squeezing action of the extinguishing means; further, to provide novel means for receiving the ashes and tliebutts of the smoked article, and matches, and for retaining the same; and, further, to provide novel related means for discharging ashes and -the butts.

For convenience, the cigarette, cigar or the like will be hereinafter referred to as a roll of tobacco.

A housing 21 comprises a frame having a skeleton bottom 22 in which there is an opening 23, a preferably closed rear endwall 24 and a front end skeleton Wall 25. y

Side walls 26 are provided for the housing, these side walls being preferably made of ;a

Vfine wirek mesh, forming forammous or perforate side Walls for permittingair to pass freely therethrough, but preventing the passage of ashes from the roll of tobacco being smoked. The upper edges of the side walls are rolled and folded as at 27 to reinforce the same. y

The end edges thereof are let into rabbets 28, respectively in the end walls 24:, 25, and the bottom edges thereof are let into rabbets 29 in the lower side strips 30 of the framing of said housing. An opening 35 is left between the upper marginsof the side walls and extends lengthwise of the housing betwen the front and rear walls thereof, The aroma from the tobacco passes freelythrough the opening and sides. The side walls are preferably arcuate in forni in cross-section, the housing being preferably ofy general cylindrical form, in the axis or middleof whichthe roll of tobacco is located, extending lengthwise of said axis.

The housing is provided with a head 38 which preferably bulges endwise outwardly for forming a cavitv 39 and a rounded end l() for the housing. Screws-4:1 secure the'head to the housing. i

rThe head is provid-ed with jaws 42, 43, which form a mouth or holder in ywhich the roll of tobaccoV 441:, shown as a cigarette in Figr 4,- is received. The holder is of such form and size as to` accommodate the cigarette, cigar or the like which is to be used in ,my improved device.` The jaws are prefer- 'ably removable, so as to be interchangeable,

or so that jaws may be readily replaced. 1

Means are provided 4for permitting relative movement to take place between the jaws, so that the same may act as a clamp. Thus the jaw 42 is mounted on a slide 46, having guides 417 slidable ingrooves 4S in the walls of a. recess 49? in saidfront wall. The guides .and grooves preferably slant upwardly and rearwardly on the head. The jaw 42 is provided wth a lip 5l received in a socket 52 in the slide,and held by a spring clip 53 .Fixed in the slide. The lip is provided with a knob 54:y received in a corresponding notch 55 in the spring, the spring having a receding inner end 56 for permitting the lip to readily slip thereunder.

The jaws 43 is held in place by similar mean-s reversely placed. These jaws are shown as sectors of a cylinder and as received inarcuate recesses 57, 58, respectively in the slideY and inthe lower part of the head, VVthe slide and head being respectively provided with arcuateflanges 59, 60, in front of the rear ends of said jaws.. rlhe jaws are preferably formed of some material such as amber, rea-l or synthetic, bakelite or other substance or composition, contact Vof whichby the lips of the user would not be objection= able. The frame of the housing and the head of the same are preferably made of metal.

A spring 6l is held by a. pin 62 at the inner face of the head, and is received in an eyelet 63 fixed in the slide for normally urging the slide and the jaw therein toward the companion jaw for acting' as a clamp to lightly hold the roll of tobacco in the holder and for releasing said roll.

The slide is moved to move the jaw supported thereby from its companion jaw, effected by a lever 66 pivotcd to the head on a pivot 67 and having an arm 68 received in the eyelet 63, the arm having a hook end 69 for limiting the upward movement of the slide.` The arm 7 O of the lever extends through a slot 7l in the head and has a knob 72 pivoted to its outer end on a pin 73. rJlhis slot is formed in the rear end of the head, .he rear wall of the slot being formed by the front end of the rousing proper.

ii. choker 75 is provided for choking or snufiing the light on the roll of tobacco when adjacent to the inner face of the head of the housing. It is shown comprising an acute ari-n 76 pivoted to the head on a pivot 77 and arranged to engage and press upon the roll of tobacco, pressure being exerted by a spring 78 which is a continuation of the spring 61 for normally moving the choker 75 and the slide in opposite directions toward the axis of the holder. j

rEhe arms 68, 76, are bent as at 79, 80, to locate their swinging ends adjacent to the inner face of the front wall of the head of the housing, which inner face is preferably 4in a plane perpendicular to the axes of the pivots 67 77 A disengaging lever 8l is pivoted on a pivot 82 and has an arm 83 in the slot 7l, and an arm 84,l the end of which is adapted to engage the cam face 85 of thecholer 75. A. knob 86 is pivoted to the lever at 87... r1Nhen the knob 86 is pushed upwardly, its inner end is moved out of obstructing relation with the cam face 85, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, which permits the choker to engage the roll of tobacco for pressing upon the same and obstructing the passage of air therethrough. This choker is preferably made of metal, and the flanges 59, 60, are also vpreferably made of metal, or of non-inflammable substance, and are of such nature as to cause a sweating of the parts contacting the hot portion of the roll of tobacco for adding. moisture to the pressure and causing extinguishment of the light. The flanges 59, 60, also protect the jaws 42, 43, from the heat ofthe light.

VThe upper and lower walls of the eyelet 63 are preferably straight in forward and rear'- ward direction and ofv sufficient length to permit a slanting movement of the slide 46 throughout its desiredrange without crampingaction between the eyelet and the spring 61 and arm 68. r

When the knob 86 is moved to disengage the choker, its movement is away from the knob 72 which controls the position of the slide. If it is desired to insert a new cigarette into the holder, the slide 46 is raised by movement of' the knob 72 downwardly. During this movement of the knob 72, it engages and moves the knob 86 for swinging the lever 81 into obstructing relation with the choker lever, for disengaging the choker and holding the choker in disengaged position. The fresh roll of tobacco is thereupon inserted endwise betweenv the jaws from the outside toward the inside of the holder, ejecting the butt from the holder into the housing and ash receiver, the fresh roll of tobacco being inserted to sufficient and desired distance, preferably permitting only a slight portion of the outer end of the same to protrude from the jaws. The knob 72 is thereupon released for permitting clamping of the jaws upon the fresh article'to be smoked.`

The roll of ltobacco is thereupon lit while in theholder by inserting the flame or light through the upper opening. A receptacle 91 for the ashes,-butts and match ends is provided under the housing. The bottom 92 thereof is shown ofarcuate form in cross-section and asslanting downwardly from front to rear ofy the receptacle. It has a rear end wall 98, in which there is an opening 94A, closed by a door 95.v The receptacle is hinged to the housing by a hinge 96, the butts 97, 98, of which are respectively secured to the rear wall of the housing and of the ash receiver. The door is also hinged, a third butt 99 of the hinge being secured to the door, and all of the butts of the hinges are pivoted about the pintle 100 of the hinge. A spring 101, the respective ends of which are received against the butts 97, 99, normally holds the door closed. The door is provided with a knob 102 .for readily opening the same, if it is desired to empty the ash receiver.

The ash receiver is normally held in closed position upon the housing by a latch 105 pivoted to the receptacle on a pin 106 and engaging a keeper 107 on the housing, a spring 108 normally urging the latch into engagement with the keeper, and the latch having an arm 109 which extends through a slot 110 in the forward end wall of the receptacle, by means of which the latch maybe operated from the outside of the receptacle.

A plate 111 is located between the bottom of the housing and the top of the ash receiver, its margin being let into a rabbet 112 around the margin of an opening 114 at the top of the ash receiver. This plate is provided with an opening 115 extending lengthwise of the housing and having slantingly dependingL walls 116 forming recesses 117 between the edges of said margins and the upper end of the ash receiver for retaining the contents of the ash receiver and preventing spilling thereof through the opening 23 if the device should be tilted during use.

A handle is provided for the device so that the same may be held by the user. Such a handle is shown at 121 and comprises a ring 122 at the side of the closure. It may be formed up out of a stiff metal strip 123 and be provided with a soft covering 124. The inner end of the handle is provided with a latch portion 125, comprising upwardly eX- tending reversely bent Walls, which normally spread apart and are received in sockets of socket pieces 126 at the respective sides of the device, the walls of the socket pressing said upturned strips of the handle toward each other so that Vthe handle frictionally holds the device. The outer wall of the socket is received in a recess 127 formed in the latch. The handle is removable and other forms of handles may be employed. f

Exemplifying they holding of the device and viewing Figs. 1 and 2, the first finger of the left` hand of the user may be passed into the ring 122, with the end of the finger toward the mouth end of the device. This will permit the second and third fingers of kthe user to rest in the cavities 128, 129, l formed in the shank'of the holder and byits connection with the ash receiver. This places the holderin convenient positionA for smoking use, as the movement of the left hand of the user toward his mouth naturally passes the mouth end of the roll of tobacco toward his mouth. The device rests on the back of the hand.

If the holder is placed on the other side of the device, the parts are arranged for most convenient use of the device by the user when .L

employing his right'hand, the positions of the fingers being correspondingly the same, and the use and convenience thereof being correspondingly the same as when the 'user vuses his left hand in manipulating the dekinds, and maintains the roll of tobacco in r convenient position for smoking, causes the ,deposit of all ashes, butts, matches and the like in the ash receptacle, and prevents the accidental spilling thereof, while at the same time the proper burning of the roll of tobacco is maintained, and the aroma thereof permitted to escape from the housing so as to give the user the benefit of the same.

`My improved device `enables the cleanly yuse of cigarettes, cigars and the like; prevents the undesirable spilling or spreading of ashes and butts; and avoidsthe danger of fire.

1.y ln a device of the characterl described, the combination of a housing for the roll of tobacco, said housing having vfo-raminous side, an open top and a front wall, a holder on said iront wall for the roll, and a choker at the inner end of said holder arranged to act onA the roll of tobacco to extinguish the lire thereof.

2. In. a device of the character described, the combination of a housing for a roll of tobacco', housing having foraminous side, an opent-op and a front wall, a clamp on said front wall for said roll, said clamp comprising sectors about said roll, a manual operating means for causing separation between said sectors, resilient means for causing approach between said sectors, a choker at the inner endoi" said clamp arranged to act on Athe roll for extinguishing the fire thereof, and manual operating means for said choker, said two-named manual operating means being so related as to cause operation of said second-named manual operating means forv retracting said choker by manual movement of said inst-named manual operating means to release said clamp.

3. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a housing for a roll of tobacco, said housing comprising a head,ra slide thereon, a mouth piece comprising sectors respectively on said head and on said slide, releasable connecting means between said respective se-ctors and said head and said slideA respectively, a spring acting on said slide for causing approach between said sectors, and a manual means'having connection with said slide for moving said sector of the mouth piece thereon from the sector of said mouth piece on said head.

In a device of the character described, thev combination of a housing for a roll of 1tobacco of the character described,.a head for saidhousing having a front wall bulfed outwardly in the direction of the length of said housing and forming an inner cavity, a slide on said head, a mouth piece comprising sectors respectively on said head and kon said slide, a spring normally moving said slide with its sector toward the sector on said head, an operating lever for said slide pivoted to said head, a ,choker for the roll of tobacco, and a choker lever pivoted to said head, said levers having forwardly projecting portions extending into said cavity for locating the operated ends thereof in adjacency to the inner ends of said sectors, which inner ends are adjacent to the inner faceof said outwardly bulged wall, and operati-ng parts for said levers outside said head.

5. ln a device of the character described,

the combination of a housing for receiving a roll of tobacco such as a cigarette, cigar or the like', said housing having a oraminous side wall, an open top, an open' bottom and a forwardly extending front wall, al holder for thel mouth end of said roll of tobacco in said front wall, an ash' receiver under said housing having pivotal. connection with said housin g and having an open top registering with said open bottom o said housing, a handle, and releasable connecting means between said handle andthe respect-ive sides of said connected housing and ash receiver'.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a housing for receiving a roll of tobacco such as a cigarette, cigar or the like, said housing having a foraminous side wall, an open top, an open bottom and a forwardly extending front wall, a holder for the mouth end of said roll of tobacco in said front wall, an ash receiver under said housing havingy pivotal connection with said housing and having an open top registering with sai open bottomof said housing, a handle, and means connecting said handle with said con'- nected housing and ash receiver for locating said handle at the'side thereof, said handle comprising a loop for receiving a finger of the user lengthwise of said housing, and said handle having an inwardly indented recess at the side of said loop for' receiving `another finger othe user length-wise of said housinU.
