This invention relates to' a cigarette holding andsnufling device for use in motor vehicles, commercial establishments, in the home and in similar places.

The principal object of this invention the provision of a handy, compact device for holding burning cigarettes when extinguishing them is not desired and for snufiing burning cigarettes when extinguishing them is desired. This device consists basically of a fixed wall, a hinged wall which is normally spaced apart from thefixed wall, a .pair of finger pieces attached to said fixed and hinged walls for manually swinging the hinged wall into juxtaposition with the fixed wall to snuff the burning end of a cigarette between them, and a top-wall which is connected to the fixed wall and which has an opening formed therein through which the burning end of. a cigarette may be inserted into proper position between the fixed and hinged walls.

The combination device herein claimed is so constructed that its fixed and hinged walls .are normally spaced apart at an acute angle relative to each other so that when .a lighted cigarette is inserted between them, through the opening in the top wall, it tends to remain in a vertical position under reasonably favorable conditions for continued burning ofits lighted end for a reasonable period of time. There is a small space between the lower ends of the fixed and hinged walls so that .a draft of air is caused to 'flow upwardly through said space and up past the lighted end of the cigarette and finally up through the opening in the top wall. The. device also includes two end walls which help to convertthe device into a flue soas to keep the cigarette burning for""a reasonable period of time. The space between the lower ends of the fixed and hinged walls also performs another function: It serves as an outlet for the cigarette ashes after the lighted end is snuffed out between the fixed and hinged walls.

An important aspect of the device herein claimed is the provision which it includes for affixing it to the side of an ash tray or the like. A clip is provided on the device which enables it to be mounted upon the walls of drawer-type ash trays of the kind provided in motor vehicles. The clip may be disposed either vertically or horizontally on the device herein claimed so that said device may be mounted either on a vertically extending wall or support or on a horizontally extending wall or support. Other mounting means may be provided for mounting this device on any suitable support.

2 Claims; (01. 131-256) An important feature of the device herein I claimed is that it instantaneously and completely snuffs burning cigarettes. It applies a positive pressure to the burning end of the cigarette and it is in full and complete contact with thesame. Whenthis device is operated in aproper manner,

the burning end of the cigarette is squeezed flat so as to completely extinguish the fire; This action not only extinguishes thefire but also cools the extinguished end of the cigarette;

24 and 26 respectively, a base plate 28 which supports the fixed and hinged side walls and the two end walls, a torsion spring 30 which is connected to the base plate and the hinged side wall to maintain said hinged wall a spaced distance from the fixed side wall I2, a flange 32 which extends downwardly from the top wall to engage the hinged wall and thereby to prevent the hinged wall from swinging in clockwise direction (as viewed in Fig. 4) beyond the position shown in said Fig. 4 in response to the action of spring 30 thereon, and a clip 34 which is connected to or is integral with said base plate 28.

Fixed side wall It may be integral with top wall l6 as Fig. 4 clearly shows and it may be provided with a bottom flange 36 by which it may be affixed to base plate 28. A plate 38, corresponding to flange 36 may also be fixed to base plate 28. Plate 38 is rolled along one of its side edges to receive a pin or pintle 40 on which torsion spring 30 is mounted. Side wall l4 may also be rolled along its lower edge to accommodate the same-pintle 4.0., It is by this means that. wall I4 is hingedly supported on base plate 28.

It will be noted in Fig. 4 that a space 42 is provided between the fixed and hinged side walls, at their lower ends. This space is formed by recessing the bottom of fixed wall l2 as Fig. clearly shows. This recessing may be accomplished in several ways but the preferred wa-y'i'ssimply to press the side wall outwardlyas; shown in Fig. 3. Space 42 allows the air to enter the device herein claimed in order to keep the cig arette in a lighted state. and also serves as an outlet iorthe cigarette; ashes. whichtend to. drop from the. cigarettes; inserted. therein.
