Abstract

In the production of multi-layer PTFE seals to be held in a valve closing element or a valve seat, pure PTFE powder is compacted in a first compacting operation for a first, thin covering layer (34) forming the sealing surface of the seal. A mixture (33) of PTFE powder and a filler which can be washed out is then compacted by a second compacting operation to form a region, which is rubber-elastic due to its porous nature, of a second layer situated at the bottom during use. The whole is then sintered. After the sintering process, the filler is washed out. The thickness of the bottom layer in the compacted state is about four times the particle size of the filler, which is about 0.25 to 0.5 mm, while the covering layer is at least 0.3 mm thick. The PTFE powder to be mixed with a filler which can be washed out can be electrostatically discharged prior to mixing. <IMAGE>
