Abstract
Compounds of formula: <IMAGE> in which R2 represents hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl, R3 represents hydrogen, a C1-C5 alkyl or a phenyl and R4 and R5 represent hydrogen or a halogen, are prepared by reaction of a 1-(2-hydroxy-R5-phenyl)-1-(R4-phenyl)alcohol and of an alkali metal salt of a dichloro-, dibromo- or diiodo-R2-acetic acid, and then treatment with an acid. The acids obtained can be converted to C1-C5 alkyl esters, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl esters, (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl esters and dialkylaminoalkyl (C1-C4 alkyl) esters, by reaction with a corresponding alcohol or with diazomethane. Chlorine can be removed from the compounds I with R4 and/or R5 = chlorine by reacting with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. The compounds and their alkali metal, alkaline-earth metal, aluminium, ammonium and amine salts have a hypolipemiating activity and reduce plasmatic lipid levels; they can be used in the treatment of hyperlipemia, of certain cardiac insufficiencies and of chronic anginal states.
